Great Barrier Reef

Monday 18th of July 2016 and my alarm went off at 6 o'clock. I turned off my alarm and I went to bed again hoping that my valet would forget to wake me up. Well, I was just back in bed when it knocked on my door. She had a tray with tea and I had two bananas Great Barrier Reeffrom yesterday in my cabin, so it was almost like breakfast in bed.

Darn, it was early, and it was dark outside. At 6 thirty it was still dark and I decided to wait for the second water session at 8 thirty and I went to bed again.

They were in my cabin several times, first they came and wanted a signature that I was on board before they moved to the next snorkelling site. And then it just continued with the disturbance.

And on top of that it was rolling heavily when we moved in the rough sea. Will it be possible to snorkel in the sea? I heard them drop the anchor and I looked out my window. It was gloom and grey for as long as I could see and I was not happy.

I was ready for the 8 thirty water session but it was cancelled due to the weather. It was almost 11 o'clock when I got in to the water and the current was very strong. We had breakers on the Top Deck Club Snorkel with Reef Encounterother side of the coral reef and as soon as you stopped to take a picture you drifted away.

The rope securing the boat is also under heavy load so there are a strong current from the reef. I spotted a shark first thing, I took a picture, and one more before the shark was gone.

But now I discover that I have camera #4 and yesterday I had camera #1. The camera was set to MACRO and exposure to -3 and the pictures was nothing but blur. Ducking duck! This was the picture I should have impressed my nephews with. I set up the camera as I wanted it but of course, no more sharks.

Do you want to see sharks? Yes, I thought so, then here is a trick that will guarantee you to see a shark. If they are nearby. Bring an empty plastic bottle and make the crackling noise and the sharks will soon come as they think it is lobsters doing something with their shells.

But be careful, very careful! The shark will come thinking it is a lobster, and don't play with a shark and the shark's food. There are Bull sharks and along with the tiger shark and great white shark, are among the three shark species most likely to bite humans.

But my Guide had never seen any Bull sharks during her 17 months as a Guide. But she heard about one group on the reef and one of the group members had seen Bull shark. He had got up on shallow water and he had not been able to warn the others as the noise would have alarmed the Bull shark. But the Blacktip is usually a friendly shark.

The blacktip shark

(Carcharhinus limbatus) is a species of requiem shark, and part of the family Carcharhinidae. It is common to coastal tropical and subtropical waters around the world, including brackish habitats. Genetic analyses have revealed substantial variation within this species, with populations from the western Atlantic Ocean isolated and distinct from those in the rest of its range.

The blacktip shark has a stout, fusiform body with a pointed snout, long gill slits, and no ridge between the dorsal fins. Most individuals have black tips or edges on the pectoral, dorsal, pelvic, and caudal fins. It usually attains a length of 1.5 m.

Swift, energetic piscivores, blacktip sharks are known to make spinning leaps out of the water while attacking schools of small fish. Their demeanor has been described as "timid" compared to other large requiem sharks. Blacktip sharkBoth juveniles and adults form groups of varying size.

Like other members of its family, the blacktip shark is viviparous; females bear one to 10 pups every other year. Young blacktip sharks spend the first months of their lives in shallow nurseries, and grown females return to the nurseries where they were born to give birth themselves. In the absence of males, females are also capable of asexual reproduction.

Normally wary of humans, blacktip sharks can become aggressive in the presence of food and have been responsible for a number of attacks on people. This species is of importance to both commercial and recreational fisheries across many parts of its range, with its meat, skin, fins, and liver oil used. It has been assessed as Near Threatened by the IUCN, on the basis of its low reproductive rate and high value to fishers.
Near Threatened (IUCN 3.1)

2 missed snorkelling’s this morning and this water session, well, it was a disappointment with the shark. And there were also a very strong current so as soon as I stopped to take a picture I drifted off. To come close to the coral reef was very hard as the current took me away from the reef. I gave up, maybe scared to meet another not so friendly shark?

Anyway, I returned and went back on board. Reef Experience had arrived to the site and she will take us back ashore around 3 o'clock in the afternoon when they are ready with the day tour. She delivered the overnight passengers to us when she arrived.

The reef is drying up and when the swell is coming over the reef there will be a lot of current and it will be very hard to snorkel and to take pictures. So I skipped the last water session. Well, the Top Deck Club Snorkel with Reef Encounteronly thing I miss to see is a whale. And of course, to get a picture of the shark would have been very nice.

But now I got some lunch instead, salmon wrapper or whatever they called it.

But I'm very happy with my Great Barrier Reef experience. A recommended trip, but stay two nights, one night isn't quite enough. And bring your own Pepsi MAX as they only have Coca Cola. As I told them before I left, it had been perfect, Top Deck Club Snorkel with Reef Encounterbut you just couldn't reach a 5 grading. But swap the Coke for Pepsi and you are Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.streaching the top grade.

Well, and a table or bench in the cabin to put things on, now I had to have everything on the floor. But it was time to leave to continue the Kangaroo and Koala adventure. But before we could leave we had to have a safety briefing in the saloon. When we were ready I went up and the Reef Experience was soon next to us and I could cross the gangway leaving Reef Encounter behind. And suddenly the weather turned gorgeous. Sunshine and the wind was gone.

I was back at my room at Pacific Hotel Cairns and I spent an hour there before I went to look for a restaurant. Walking around town and I bought some medicine for my running nose. Continue to Tokyo Dumplings, Cairnslook for a restaurant, and it was some kind of half self-service and booked tables all over town. And I'm in no mood to wait for a table so I continued.

And I don't go to a restaurant for self-service. I passed Tokyo Dumplings and I went inside.

Their excellent dumplings and a Teriyaki fried noodles, darn, it was good and I had ordered more if it wasn't for the two ladies sitting next to me. We were chatting and I didn't want to leave them with any impressions of having any eating disturbances.

I finished the night by walking along the beach street and a strawberry milkshake. I emptied a convenient store on Pepsi MAX and I returned to Pacific Hotel.

Tomorrow morning I will leave for Jabiru Safari Lodge at Mareeba Tropical Savanna and Wetland Reserve. The will come from Cairns Limousine Service to pick me up at 11 o'clock so there will be time for some good morning relaxing.

And I hope to see some Kangaroos on the way to Jabiru Safari Lodge. But we won't see any Koalas as they live down south, at least this is how I understand it. Just click HERE to find out what we see on the tour to Mareeba Tropical Savanna and Wetland Reserve. I'm already delirious by anticipation. Tomorrow might be the first time ever that I see a kangaroo.
