  Saturday 13th of March 2021 and we leave Paphos at 6 o'clock and we are soon on the highway driving towards Larnaca and our first stop at the Meneou Pools in Larnaca. We see 4 Golden Plover and of course, Flamingos. There are a few waders but they are all too far away for any good pictures.  Meneou (Μενεού) Pools
There are some small plovers looking for food and I also see a couple of Slender-billed Gulls. In one of the ponds it was a big group of Black-headed Gulls and only 3 Slender-billed Gulls. Too far away but I got a few pictures further up the road when we spotted four Slender-billed Gulls.   Common Greenshank

We continue to the next eBird hotspot: Larnaca (Λάρνακας) Sewage Works a few minutes up the road. There is a bird hide overlooking the sewage plant ponds next to Larnaca International Airport. There is a lot of Yellow-legged Gulls and Great Cormorants in the ponds. And there was one Grey Heron. And of course, flamingos, they are in every pond on Cyprus, hundreds of them. OK, here was only about 20 of them. Gorgeous weather in it was really joy full to sit in the hide looking at the birds.  Larnaca (Λάρνακας) Sewage Works

Next to the eBird hotspot: Larnaca (Λάρνακας) Sewage Works there is another eBird hotspot, the Meneou -- Trailer Park. So it was just to restart the eBird app with the new hotspot. The area looks like a perfect place for warblers but we only spotted one Spectacled Warbler. There was a Stonechat as well, but we have seen at least one Stonechat at everywhere we have been looking for birds on Cyprus.  Spur-winged Lapwing or Spur-winged Plover

We drove to the eBird hotspot: Hala Sultan Tekke Mosque and we have a pond full of birds on the left hand side as soon as we turn off the main road. I could come closer to the Slender-billed Gull for a couple of pictures. We had many Ruffs in the pond together with Redshanks and Stilts. There were no birds at the Mosque and we drove back and parked at the main road. On the other side of the road is another eBird hotspot Larnaca (Λάρνακας) Airport Pools--North. Here was not much to see, of course plenty Flamingos.  Hala Sultan Tekke Mosque

We drove north, with a stop for ice cream and we stopped at the Aqueduct where we had been birding when I was here three years ago. Back then it was a construction side, they built a bicycle track and what I now see as a channel to the reeds. Today it was looking better but it was better last time as you could walk out to the reeds where they built the channel. But we saw a lot of birds but next to impossible to get any pictures as they saw us coming. Nowhere to sneak up on the birds, we just saw them and they were off.  Aqueduct at Larisis, Larnaca

So this time it was a short visit to the Aqueduct and we left for the eBird hotspot: Oroklini Lake. There are two bird hides at the site and when we drove from the first hide we passed a Cetti's Warbler laying on the street. We made a U-turn to see if it was alive or dead. The bird was alive but very scared laying on the very hot pavement. Most likely knocked out after having hit a car. We brought it in to the car and I held it while we drove to the other hide. We gave the bird water and checked the wings. The bird looked OK and it took of when we released the bird and we were VERY HAPPY that the bird was OK and it took off when we released the bird and we were VERY HAPPY that the bird was OK. Cetti's Warbler, a bird I have tried to get on picture since I arrived to Cyprus. I came very close to the bird this time, but this is not what I wanted it to be.   When we had released the bird we went up in the bird hide. We were lucky with the Goldfinch as we had a group landing next to us. We spotted the Cetti's Warbler but the pictures turned out bad. But it was very nice to sit in the bird hide to enjoy the view. We had a couple of Moorhens swimming, too far for pictures. I decided to stay a few extra minutes in the hide as I saw one of them coming closer, slowly slowly. And it paid out to wait, the Moorhen came pretty close to the hide before we left the Oroklini Lake. And we were happy that we had managed to save the Cetti's Warbler.   Common Moorhen

Last stop for today will be Akhna Dam where we will have our picnic lunch. The plan was to have the picnic at the Oroklini Lake, but we had bought crisp with the ice cream so we were really not hungry. So we decided to have the picnic at the Akhna Dam. Akhna Dam is located close to the Turk Cypriote border so we drive along military forts, border fence and look out towers. The water level in the Akhna Dam is very high so we cannot drive out in the area as we did last time. We were soon making a U-turn and we go back to park next to the water. We looked at Coots, Lapwings and Great Crested Grebes while enjoying the picnic.  Spur-winged Lapwing

We drove back to Paphos and next birding will be on Monday and I will spend the Sunday looking for birds in Paphos. I hope the weather is good tomorrow and you just need to click HERE to find out if we see any birds.
