Tuesday 30th of March 2021 and my Gyuide arrive 10 minutes before 7 and we were soon on our way. We decided to start at the eBird hotspot: Laferla Cross before going to do the Covid test.
We decide to take an exciting shortcut to the eBird hotspot: Laferla Cross hoping to see something exciting. But it was almost ending in a disaster.
My driver was almost getting stuck between the two stonewalls. We put the car in reverse and he lost the cover for the right hand side rear-view mirror.

We tried another road but it was the same and we went back to the main road. We actually checked out two hotspots as we did the Girgenti as well. And we had finished both the hotspots at 8 o'clock, same time as the clinic opened.
We drove to the Healthway Medical Center in Haz-Zebbug and I did the test and it went pretty quick as there was only two persons before me. I waited for 15 minutes for the result and I paid 30 € and I walked out to the taxi. My Driver could see that the test had been negative.
He told me that I had been off this morning nervous for the Covid test. Not happy as usual but now I was back in my normal mood. Yes, the Covid test was negative and I can fly to Sweden tomorrow after a short birding in the morning.
I don't know why, maybe because of all the excitement, but I got hungry and we stopped to buy the traditional Maltese filled bread. I choose cheese filled and a bottle of chocolate milk.
Here they have spelled Pastizzeria 2 different ways on the same shop
I always forget the name and how to spell it, but they have spelled Pastizzeria in two different ways at the Pastizzeria we stopped to buy food on the way to the eBird hotspot: “Xrobb l-Ghagin” The first hotspot we visited on the second day here on Malta.
A beautiful area and we drove around looking for birds. We passed the power plants powered with LNG and there is a tanker they use as storage and they top it up every second month from a ship arriving here, yes, every second months.
The peninsulas sticking out in the sea so this is among the first the birds see when flying from Africa to Europe. So they stop to take a rest. When I came to Malta there was no Wheatears here, but the last few days we have seen quite a few.
Same as when I was on Cyprus. So Malta will soon have plenty Wheatears here as well, for a while and they are off towards north.

Walking along the edge to look for the Hoopoe
I spotted a Hoopoe and I went out on the edge to look for the bird without any success. Really scary on the edge, when will the edge collapse after the ocean have eroding the cliff?
The cliffs are very high and we can see how the water have scooped out the cliff and you are standing several meters out over the water surface when on the top.

We turn around and drive north on the peninsula and we pass the firework factory that I found a little bit beautiful first time we were here to look for birds. We left the hotspot and we will have a look at the eBird hotspot: “Zonqor”
Nothing interesting at “Zonqor” and we decided to drive to Blue Grotto. Last time I walked down to the “Blue Wall and Grotto Viewpoint” leaving my camera in the cars. I discovered a lot of swifts so I wanted to go there again.
So today I brought my camera, of course, today not a swift to be seen around the cliff.
But it was interesting to see 6 Little Egret flying in formation over the see way below me. Nover seen Egrets and Herons flying in formation before I came to Cyprus and Malta

I went back to the car and I told my driver to get back to the hotel. But he wanted to continue birding and I said that we could make one more stop. We choose the eBird hotspot: “Santa Katerina” and we found a very beautiful area.
And there was a MINI forest and my Driver asked me what the bird was in front of you. I could not see any bird, but suddenly the bird moved and I could see a black and white bird.
I got out of the car and it turned out to be a Collared Flycatcher, most likely newly arrived to Malta on the way to, well, maybe Sweden.
Two male Collared Flycatchers
I was happy with the Collared Flycatcher and in a good mood when we left for the hotel. I will pack my bag tonight and my driver will be here at 7 tomorrow morning and we will go look for birds before going to the airport. Click HERE to find out what we will see, or if we see anything.
