Aladdin's adventure at Asiatique The Riverfront

Saturday 21st of February 2015 and I never went to the China Town yesterday as I ended up at Marriott with my friend. DARN! A huge set back for my diet. I had planned for a visit to the The Buffet at Marriott Hotel in BangkokBangkokian Museum this very afternoon, but as we got started late with the boxing and the museum close at 4 o'clock I had to cancel the The Bangkokian Museum also called the Bangkokian Museum House.

I decided to have a look at the Asiatique, The Riverfront and they should open at 17:00 according to information on the internet. And I will have to go there using the Chao Phraya Express Boat so this will be fun. I will have to take the subway to Silom and from there I will take the sky train to Sapan Taksin and the Chao Phraya Express Boat.

I walked to Sukhumvit subway station and I was surprised to find all the people at the station. Luckily enough there wasn't so much people on the subway train towards Hua Lampong.

Plenty people on the sky train, but not as much as on the first train

I took the subway to Silom and I changed to the sky train. It is about 200 meters to walk and when I came up on the platform there was a sky train at the platform. The train was so full so they had to leave some passengers on the platform. I was really hoping that there would be less people on the next train. And I was lucky, there were plenty people on the train coming, but the aft part was OK and it was a kind of enjoyable ride to Saphan Taksin.

I walked down the stairs from Saphan Taksin sky train station to the Sathorn (Central) boat station. The Chao Phraya Express Boat stations are numbered from the central boat jetty. Going Aladdin's adventure with the Chao Phraya Express BoatNorth of the Saphan Taksin bridge they are numbered with an N in front of the number.

Prakan “N33” is the last boat station going North (Green flagged boat operating between CENTRAL and “N33”)

If you're going South the boat stations have an S in front of the number. Last station going South is Ratburan Big C “S4” (Yellow flagged boat operating between “S4” and “N30”) Click for Chao Phraya Express Boat ROUTE MAP or the Chao Phraya Express Boat Map over the Chao Phraya River with Aladdin's adventure with the Chao Phraya Express Boatthe numbered stations.

Anyway, I got off the sky train and I walked down the stairs to the Sathorn boat station and I was chocked. I had expected the boat station to be empty at this time of the day, at least on a Saturday evening.

There was a queue going all the way to the stairs to the sky train station. What the Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st is this? I squeezes my way through the queue. The queue didn't go to the Chao Phraya Express Boat ticket office. The Aladdin's adventure with the Chao Phraya Express BoatChao Phraya Express Boat was closed and there was not much people waiting for the Chao Phraya Express Boats.

Turned out that they have a free shuttle to Asiatique The Riverfront. And there was people waiting, I can't remember having ever seen a queue like this. I'M NOT GOING WIT THIS BOAT!

The ticket office to the Chao Phraya Express Boat was closed, but I can buy the ticket on board. There was only one girl working at the Chao Phraya Express Boat and she was on the pier. I checked the route map on the pier and the orange flagged boat stops at the Asiatique The Waterfront. The girl on the pier told me that the boat would come in 15 minutes. Good, or I would have to get a taxi, no way I go on the free shuttle with all that people. And I really want to go by the boat.

There were a lot of traffic on the river. Dinner cruises and it looked very nice. 25 years since I was on Chao Phraya River and it was a terrible experience. So all the river side condos, I have Aladdin's adventure with the Chao Phraya Express Boatnever understood why people wanted to have a river view.

And if I had a condo with river view for sale I would for sure have tried to hide that fact.

Sukhumvit Soi 22 and the slum area. As I live on Sukhumvit I know that Soi 22 is OK today, but back in the days it was slum or a big part of it from Rama 4. President Park in the middle of it. And I only remember the lower part of Silom and the river as Aladdin's adventure with the Chao Phraya Express Boatan area I have had no interest in. BUT WOW! Now it is totally different.

Things have happened in Bangkok the last 25 years and now I understand the river view. It was beautiful as I have learnt the last weeks while riding with the Chao Phraya Express Boat. And all by accident when I went back from the Museum of Siam. I could see the Ferris wheel at the Asiatique The Riverfront from the boat station and it looked to be pretty close.

There were quite a few people waiting for the Chao Phraya Express Boat and I was very relieved when they got on board the north bound orange flagged boat. When the southbound boat came there was not much people going South.

The boat was full when they arrived, but all the passengers got off at the pier. I bought a 15 Baht ticket and it took us about 10 minutes to get to Asiatique The Riverfront.

We stopped at a boat station with a big Buddha. So this turned out to be an interesting stretch of the river. We were soon approaching the Ferris wheel and the Asiatique. Last station and we got Aladdin's adventure at Asiatique The Riverfrontoff before the boat turned around to head back North again.

I got on the jetty and I took a few pictures of Asiatique and suddenly there was a girl screaming that I could not take any pictures.
- Are you for foocking real?

The first restaurant I saw was Baan Khanitha by the river. Must be a branch of Baan Khanitha at Sukhumvit Soi 23 and now I know where to eat. Baan Khanitha on Sukhumvit Soi 23 have very good food. And I was getting a wee bit hungry, but today I was not going to disappoint myself by eating.

I was soon to realise that that wasn't going to be easy. The area was full of nice restaurants. There were pubs and the area looked very nice. There are huge warehouses and small alleys
History

Back in the 1900s, during the reign of King Chulalongkorn, Asian countries were under threat of invasion from the European superpowers. With great foresight, King Chulalongkorn took the initiative to raise Siam to the level of leading countries of the world and decided to establish relations with Denmark.

Included in this process was the construction of a pier belonging to the East Asiatic Company, a business dedicated to the export of teak wood and owned by Mr. Hans Nille Andersen, a Danish national. This pier signalled the beginning of international trade between the Kingdom of Siam (the former name of Thailand) and European nations and was the key to Siam maintaining the sovereignty and independence it enjoys to this day.

Today, that same area which the East Asiatic pier occupies is being restored to its original glory under the name “ASIATIQUE The Riverfront,” the first and the biggest lifestyle project in Asia on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, and soon to become Bangkok’s trendiest landmark.

From www.thaiasiatique.com
between them.

They have built the area like the old port and there were statues of Stevedores etc. around the area.

But today the new built warehouses are a market and restaurants and I was impressed by the area. Yeah, this is no longer Bangkok from 25 years ago. What a face life some of the areas in Bangkok have got.

And I like it, when they tear down old houses in Europe it is a shame because they are mostly beautiful houses. But those remembering the old houses along Sukhumvit can't be sad to see them replaced by new houses. There is one house, around 100 years old at the Asiatique and they are going to renovate the house as this is on eof the original houses. This is a beautiful house and I was happy to learn that they will save the house.

I walked around the area and when I reached the North side where the big Ferris Wheel are located I ran in to some kind of go-cart track for children. There was also some chars in a drum Bike show at Asiatique The Riverfrontor something. There was a BIKE SHOW and bicycle is really Bike show at Asiatique The Riverfrontsomething that have caught on in Thailand. A few years ago you never saw any bicycle.

Now there are bicycle shops everywhere, and it is not any ordinary bicycles. Expensive stuff and expensive clothing to go with the bicycles. And the strangest thing, helmets. Everyone wearing helmets as a status symbol. HEY! LOOK AT ME I HAVE A BICYCLE!!! Everyone you see on a bicycle wears a helmet. But motorcycle drivers, well, never mind, no one cares if you drive around on a cheap motorcycle.

When I was in Khao Yai with my friend there must have been thousands of Bike show at Asiatique The Riverfrontpeople with bicycles and you also see them in Bangkok, unheard of not very long ago.

But it is a good trend, healthy, but to sit on a bicycle in Bangkok. Bike lanes or not, I don't thinks so. Suddenly you found yourself under a truck driven by a drunk driver.

I would love to have had a Swedish bicycle here, but I will not get out on the roads of Bangkok Bike show at Asiatique The Riverfronton a bicycle. I'm scared enough just by sitting in a taxi.

There was even a tent with Thai Airways and it was all about how to get your bicycle on board the plane on your next holiday. Yeah, a bicycle, imagine if they could ban all the cars from the roads. The temperature would come down and we could be bicycling around Bangkok. That would have been nice and it would be possible to shot through town in a few minutes.

I left the bike show behind and I was walking along the river back to the Chao Phraya Express Boat jetty. I asked the girl if she knew what time the orange flagged bout would depart. Well, Asiatique The Riverfrontshe didn't knew and as it was turning late I decided to take a taxi back home.

I was also getting hungry and I decided to have two apples when I was back home, but I kept an eye open for a restaurant. But no, I was not going to any restaurant. I walked towards the taxi station. I walked by a kebab stand and it looked very good.
Asiatique The Riverfront

And when I had finished my Kebab I felt peckish for some sweets, ice cream. I walked around looking for a Dairy Queen but there was no Dairy Queen to be found. Actually, it was kind of hard to find a place to get some soft ice cream. Ordinary boring ice cream was no problem to find.
Asiatique The Riverfront

I passed a place that looked like they had ice cream. I stopped to have a look and it turned out to be a Japanese ice cream. Well, this cannot be bad so I ordered a vanilla ice cream.

The ice cream at the Dairy Queen is for sure better and I was disappointed with the ice cream. I even asked if the ice cream was made out of ice cubes. Asiatique The RiverfrontTasted like the ice cream was made from ice cubes. I think the ice cream was made out of chips from an ice cream block, not very good.

I finished the ice cream and I left with a mental note Dairy Queento never come back. Well, maybe I was lucky not to find any Dairy Queen, I might have had 2 (TWO) ice creams.

I walked towards the street and the taxi station.

I found two theatres at Asiatique, one Muay Thai show and one show looking like it was a dance show The picture had someone looking like Elvis on the poster. I didn't want to see any of the Asiatique The Riverfrontshows. But it is good to know, there might be something in the future.

The taxi queue was almost as long as the queue for the free shuttle boat. And as everyone arrives here with the boat there is not many taxis arriving. Didn't take much to realise that I would not be home until very late if I was going to wait for a taxi here

But there were plenty taxis passing on the road and I crossed the road and I was in a taxi within a few seconds.

Asiatique The Riverfront is just a few minutes away from the Sathorn Pier and a free shuttle boat is available. This is the information you get on the internet. So there are hundreds of people waiting for the free shuttle every night. The queue of waiting people goes from the berth all the way up to the sky train station.

Of course, as a tourist you know foock all and the free shuttle is the way to go. But let me give you a tip! There is the Chao Phraya Express Boat, have grown to be my favourite mode of transportation up and down the Chao Phraya River. So squeeze through the queue and go to the Chao Phraya Express Boat. Take the orange flagged boat South and you are at the Asiatique The Riverfront in a few minutes.

This will set you back by 15 Baht, and that is the same as nothing. No, thinking about it, you're better off at the free shuttle and I can be alone in the orange flagged Express Boat.

Yes, definitely a very good experience. There were plenty restaurants and places for refreshments. And it was nice restaurants, not like o Chatuchak Weekend Market. At Asiatique The Riverfront had everything, from eating fast food to high end and everything looked clean.

The market, well, same shit they sell everywhere else and if it is cheap it is because it is knock offs and not the real thing. Thailand is fighting the counterfeit goods. Yeah, fat chance, it is on sale full open. But there is all the stuff you find at any other night markets. I looked at my wrist watch and I had killed 2 hours in no time. The time had really disappeared very quickly.

So come on down to Chao Phraya River, at least one night can be spent here and I can almost guarantee you that you will enjoy yourself.
