While enjoying breakfast on board, the Vat Phou continues its cruise to Champassak. The highlight this morning is the Vat Phou ruins - the majestic pre-Angkorian 10th century temple complex and boat’s namesake.

You have time to visit the museum at the ruins site, walk up to the highest temple and take as many photos as you would like. We return you to the boat for your final lunch on board. A small boat will then take you back to Pakse, arriving around 4.00pm.

Aladdin's adventure with The Vat Phou Mekong cruise on Mekong River

Tuesday 6th of January 2015 and I got out of bed at the second wake-up call at 7 thirty. I was in the restaurant for breakfast an hour later and I had plenty time to pack my bag.

I was in the reception at 9 thirty prompt, Swedish style. No sign of the Vat Phou Cruise Representative so I sat down in the lobby. I could see a bus driving up to the hotel entrance and Aladdin's adventure with The Vat Phou Mekong cruise - Visa run to Laos2 Representatives came in to the lobby. As I had seen them coming with a bus I asked how many people we were on the cruise
- 12 Passengers

I asked where we were going and they told me we were going to a waterfall.
- What waterfall? I asked as I thought it would be the Tad Fan that I saw yesterday. They said something that I didn't recognised and they told me it was 2 and a half hour there with the buss. And I was puzzled.

Something is wrong, there is nothing about any waterfall in my itinerary, and a 2 and a half hour bus drive. I told the Guide Aladdin's adventure with The Vat Phou Mekong cruise - Visa run to Laosthat I thought we were going to cruise. Where is the boat?

I was in the bus when we turned off the road. We were taking a break at a gas stop. Good, we had one and a half hour to go and I was almost pissing my pants. Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stA big pot of tea and a few diet drinks before we took off.

The bathroom was nice and clean so I felt like a million when I returned to the mini mart. This is how the bathroom should look like along the Thai roads. To use the bathroom at a Thai gas stop you need to be drunk. And I don't mean tipsy but dead drunk.

I had planned to buy two cans of diet drinks in the minimart, but they didn't had anything I liked Aladdin's adventure with The Vat Phou Mekong cruise - Visa run to Laosand I saved some money right Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stthere and then, always welcome. Yeah, we remember how I complained about my broken valet in the beginning of the Lao adventure.

Impossible to spend any money, of course, a 5 day cruise on the Northern Mekong and there is nothing to spend money on. But a soon as I came ashore the money disappeared like there was no tomorrow, L'Elephant and other restaurants. And starting to drink beer down at the river in Vang Vieng, well, 100 to 200 Dollars disappeared so quick I never know what happened to them. Aladdin's adventure with The Vat Phou Mekong cruise - Visa run to LaosOK, I got a hint waking up in the foocking hut with a hangover force 9,6

We left the place bound for the Pha Pheng waterfall. I asked our Guide where we were going to have our lunch. He said that we would have lunch at the 4000 Islands.
Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st- What the Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st

I told him we were going to cruise to the 4000 Islands. I realised that they had sent me the wrong itinerary. The boat is going up and down the river and I'm joining the boat at the 4000 Islands and we cruise
The Khone Falls and Pha Pheng Falls

(Lao: ນ້ຳຕົກຕາດຄອນພະເພັງ) is a waterfall located in Champasak Province on the Mekong River in southern Laos, near the border with Cambodia (Khmer called "Labak Koun"). The Khone Falls are the largest in Southeast Asia and they are the main reason that the Mekong is not fully navigable into China. The falls are characterised by thousands of islands and countless waterways, giving the area its name Si Phan Don or 'The 4,000 islands'. The highest falls reach to 21 metres (69 ft); the succession of rapids stretch 9.7 km (6.0 mi) of the river's length. The average discharge of the cataract is nearly 11,000 m3/s (390,000 cu ft/s), though the highest volume on record was reached at over 49,000 m3/s.

The Khone Falls are well known as the prime reason why the Mekong River is not fully navigable into China. In the late 19th century French colonialists made repeated attempts to navigate the falls but their efforts failed. This difficulty led to the construction of the Don Det – Don Khon narrow gauge railway on Don Det and Don Khon islands.

From Wikipedia
back to Pakse. Well, this explains a lot.

We reached the Pha Pheng waterfall and we would stay for about 30 minutes. They had built a house looking like a temple where they kept a tree. It was aid that it was a 1000 year old tree that had felt in the river from one of the islands at the Pha Pheng waterfall. This made them launching a rescue operation.

There were pictures how they had tried to save the tree and they sent a helicopter to lift the tree ashore. This was not a cheap operation and then they built a house for the tree. Could as well, have built schools for the children. If you ask me, just saying.

We left the waterfall and we were going to get a long tail boat to Don Khone (Don is Island in Lao) where we will have lunch. We will also take a look at a railway bridge and a locomotive before we Aladdin's adventure with The Vat Phou Mekong cruise - Visa run to Laostake the 2 hour boat trip with the long tail boat up Mekong to our cruise boat.

It took us about 15 minutes in the bus to reach the long tail boat. We stopped just outside an exchange office. TODAY - Good exchange rate. Well, I should have brought money to exchange.

We had to walk for 5 minutes to reach the boat on the beach and I was a few minutes behind the group as I had stayed to take some pictures. The English speaking Guide was waiting for me to show the way. We left the road on to a dirt track between the houses. After 20 meters we turned right down to Aladdin's adventure with The Vat Phou Mekong cruise - Visa run to Laosthe beach between the houses.

The dirt track was a wee bit better to walk on than the sand on the beach. My shoes was beyond any state were a cleaning would have helped after the “off road racer” experience in Vang Vieng. And walking in the sand was for sure not helping.

Well, they will go straight in the garbage bin when I'm back home in Bangkok. We had to walk for about 200 meters to the long tail boat that was a wee bit bigger than the canoes.

Benches made out of thin boards and I was afraid to sit down. Would be embarrassing to break the boat, especially since I cracked one of the old wooden floor boards.

I made it on board and one thing good by getting old, I and Old fartone other guy looks to be the youngest passengers on this cruise, is that everyone helps you climbing over thresholds etc.

Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stAt first it is embarrassing, here I am thinking about myself that I look and feel like 20! And these people want to hold my hands where ever I go! Bugger off!

Took us about 30 minutes or so the reach the restaurant on Don Khone and I was surprised that there were so many villages on the islands. And it seemed to be a lot of guest houses as there were tourists Aladdin's adventure with The Vat Phou Mekong cruise - Don Khone - Visa run to Laosrelaxing in hammocks outside most of the houses.

But nothing looked very fancy and I didn't had any high hopes for any fine dining. We arrived to the restaurants a few hundred meters before we reached the old railway bridge.

We got off the long tail boat and by now I was quite hungry. Some kind of buffet with 4 Lao dishes was served. I had a plate of steamed rice with sauce from the fish dish and pork from the pork and eggplant Aladdin's adventure with The Vat Phou Mekong cruise - Don Khone - Visa run to Laosdish. Top layer was the pork and I had to scratch it of the bottom layer of eggplants.

We were going to spend about 2 hours here walking down to the bridge and the locomotive.

It didn't take long for me to finish my plate and when I was ready with the diet drink I went to discover the area while waiting for the others to be ready. In the restaurant next to us there was a duck taking a bath in the Aladdin's adventure with The Vat Phou Mekong cruise - Don Khone - Visa run to Laosdish water. I hope they keep better track of the dish water at the restaurant where we had been eating. God know what kind of dirt the duck is carrying around.

And the kind of stuff coming out from the back of the duck. Nothing I want on my dinner plate and I was in no hurry to order any food at this place.

They had huge ice Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stmachines at the restaurant where we had our lunch and they delivered big ice cubes with a loud noise. Aladdin's adventure with The Vat Phou Mekong cruise - Don Khone - Visa run to LaosAnd they were probably supplying the rest of the village with ice.

It would have been a very beautiful place if it wasn't for all the garbage lying around in the village. Hell, the whole island was covered in garbage. Like a huge landfill.

Aladdin's adventure with The Vat Phou Mekong cruise - Don Khone - Visa run to Laos
View from our lunch restaurant

I was waiting on the “main” road for the rest of the group to be ready with their lunch. The restaurant with the duck was the last restaurant on the right at the path leading from the boat Aladdin's adventure with The Vat Phou Mekong cruise - Don Khone - Visa run to Laosand the lunch restaurant.

There was a hut across the street and there were 2 girls and a baby hanging around doing nothing.

Well, I doubt that there is much to do in the village. The whole place reminded me of Kho Pang Ngan some 25 years ago. Of course with the difference that they had electricity here on Don Khone. There were electricity on Kho Pang Ngan but only for a few hours per day on Kho Pang Ngan. And we arrived day time, we were tipsy and we wanted music.

So we left with the next ferry and we took a taxi to Phuket and I have not been back since then. And I have no plans to ever go there again.

The rest of the group came and we walked down to the locomotive, another boring tourist attraction. Attraction??!! How the hell can a locomotive be an attraction? Well, I was surprised, foock the Aladdin's adventure with The Vat Phou Mekong cruise - Don Khone - Visa run to Laoslocomotive, but there was a lot of interesting information about Laos and Mekong hundred years ago.

We walked from there to the old bridge and I saw something I thought I would never see in Laos, a garbage truck, of course Lao style. Driving around collecting garbage. Now they only have to organise someone to pick up the garbage thrown in the nature and along the street.

And of course, teach the children not to throw garage other than in the bins that are not yet placed. Well, maybe in the future. When it is too late! Look at Thailand and the Philippines, too late already and I don't think there are any hope for Laos.

We walked back towards the boat and our Guide came back to look for me. We were obviously in a hurry and I walked slowly taking pictures talking to the locals.

But we were supposed to be at the boat at 5 o'clock in the afternoon and it was 2 hour in the long Long tail boat on the Mekong Rivertail boat to reach the cruise boat. And I was for sure not looking forward to sit in the long tail boat for 2 hours. My arse got sore just to thinking about it. The trip from the mainland to the Don Khone gave me a taste of what was going to come.

I was last in to the boat, wise form when coming here. There were at least two advantages to get in last.
1) No need to climb over all the other seats
2) I have a free view forward for taking pictures
And the bonus perk:
3) I will be first out of the boat and I have thus spent less time in the boat than anyone else.

Yes, it took us two hours to reach the boat and I was very happy to discover the boat. 2 hours and the last one hour 45 minutes my arse felt like, well, a sore arse is a sore arse and it was so nice Aladdin's adventure with The Vat Phou Mekong cruise - Visa run to Laoswhen we could leave the long tail boat.

First of all, it was almost impossible to move or to get off the darn plank when we reached our destination.

Our Guide told us that we would meet on the aft deck for a welcome drink and meeting before we went to our cabins. Of course, this was nothing I was happy to hear. And a welcome drink, we all know what that means. But maybe they have a diet drink for me. I was first off the long tail boat and I was first of all on the aft deck and I had a diet drink in Aladdin's adventure with The Vat Phou Mekong cruise - Visa run to Laosmy hand a few seconds later. That tasted good! I had had two in the long tail boat, but it was not exactly an enjoyable place to drink

I looked around the ship while enjoying my diet drink and I felt in love with the boat. A beautiful boat, all made of wood.
Of course a nightmare if we caught fire, the whole boat would burn up and leave nothing but ash is less than 5 minutes. But then it is close to throw myself in to the Mekong River. Just to Aladdin's adventure with The Vat Phou Mekong cruise - Visa run to Laosjump out of the window, if I can make it through. Would be nice to get stuck with my arse in the window.

Imagine that, stuck with the arse in the window with a raging fire behind. Imagine the pain with your behind on fire. Well, I can always take the alley, aft and forward and I will be in Swimming in the Mekong Riverthe river quicker than quick. Or double quick as we say in Skåne. Anyway, it was a very nice boat Aladdin's adventure with The Vat Phou Mekong cruise - Visa run to Laosand I was in love with the boat.

Some of the floor boards sagged and swayed when I walked on them. Well, some areas the whole floor sagged when I came along with a cubic ton of flapping belly.

Well, welcome drink and a “welcome on board” meeting with safety information. There were life jackets in our cabins. I saw a fire hose first thing when I stepped on board, a few meters Aladdin's adventure with The Vat Phou Mekong cruise - Visa run to Laosfrom my cabin. So I felt quite safe on board. Safety meeting and the “welcome on board” meeting was over. Welcome drinks and diet drinks were all gone and I could go to have a look at me cabin.

I brought two diet drinks with me to my cabin on the main deck, cabin #5

I opened the door and I was pleasantly surprised. My cabin was all made of wood as well, and I knew that I would like it in here. Now big, but very cosy and liveable. I'm looking forward to get going with the cruise.

There were 2 tables with chairs for 6 on each table. Yes, makes sense as we're 12 passengers on board. I was introduced to my fellow dinner guests and new friends. A couple form Switzerland. A lady from Aladdin's adventure with The Vat Phou Mekong cruise - Visa run to LaosAustralia and a couple retired and living in Bangkok.

I was the youngest, well, me and another guy from Australia are the youngest and we're old.

But it is nice, the Australian lady had travelled the world. Victoria Falls so we were talking elephants and hippos and the lack of wildlife in Laos. She had Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stalso been in Antarctica, one of my future destination. Depending of course on how I like going North to look for iceberg and polar bears next summer.

All of them had travelled the world and it was an interesting evening, and the Lao food was excellent. It had been yet another excellent day in Laos. Well, everyday have been excellent, except for the drinking and the following hangover in Vang Vieng. And Pakse was Aladdin's adventure with The Vat Phou Mekong cruise - Visa run to Laospretty boring, but I got a haircut and a bag of tea out of it.

And I had also had the time to get my Lao adventure up to date on the internet as there wasn't exactly anything else to do in Pakse. So a well-deserved rest on the room it was!

It was all Lao food for dinner and the food was excellent! Maybe I should go out in the Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stkitchen and propose to the girl in charge of the cooking. The food was fantastic! A new kind of green curry and there were some kind of Lao dolmas. Or Kåldolme as we say in Sweden.

Well, I asked them to wake me up at 6 o'clock in the morning and I'm ready for yet another action filled day tomorrow. And, yes, you just have to click HERE to find yourself in the middle of the day 2 adventure on the Southern Mekong River in Laos.
