Birding/ Bird watching in United Arab Emirates

Sunday 2nd of December 2018 and my alarm went off at 3 thirty and I had my tea and oatmeal at the desk while looking at the pictures from yesterday. I went to take a taxi and I was off for a new birding adventure leaving Radisson Blu Dubai Waterfront behind. I will explore Al Mamzar Beach Park today.

Arriving to the Al Mamzar Beach Park and I learn that there are an entrance fee, 5 Scooby Doo Dollars. I hand them my credit card. CASH ONLY! I ask for an ATM but there is no ATM in the area, but, as I´m a dashing young adventurer they let me in for free!

Coming in side and I turn left walking down towards the beach. There is already a lot of people in the park and I try to dodge them as much as possible. I run in to a Pied Myna/ Asian Pied Starling

I reach the water front and I walk along the walk path and I can hear the Rose-ringed Parakeets and I try to make a recording, and of course I try to get some pictures. Not so easy as I have to stomp around pick-nick baskets, blankets and BBQ.

But I manage to get some usable pictures and a recording and I´m happy when I continue along the beach. I come out to a parking area and I spot one Pied Myna sitting in a tree singing and I try to sneak up on the bird to make a recording.

Why are recordings of certain species restricted?
Some species are under extreme pressure due to trapping or harassment. The open availability of high-quality recordings of these species can make the problems even worse. For this reason, streaming and downloading of these recordings is disabled. Recordists are still free to share them on xeno-canto, but they will have to approve access to these recordings.

We do not take this action lightly, and we wish it were not necessary, but we have been convinced that the negative impacts of offering easy access to these recordings outweigh the benefits. If you would like access to these recordings, you may contact the recordist directly.

After having recorded and taking a picture of the Pied Myna I continued across the parking area and I spotted a few Sunbirds and a group of Indian Silverbills. They were feeding in the grass and I decided to try to make a video of the birds feeding.

I need all the video training I can get so I take every opportunity. I like the Munia/ Sparrows etc. when they are feeding in the grass. I enjoy watching them jumping around and when they get scared the whole group takes off to another area. I have been lucky only a few times coming close without scaring them and then there is a chance to get some good pictures.

Hello Jacky

Sorry to disturb! I was in the park yesterday and I spotted Indian Silverbills. I chased them around and something looked strange and I discover a yellowish bird feeding and flying with them. So I guess it is a Indian Silverbill but the colour is very different. Is this a MISCOLOURED Indian Silverbill? Have you ever seen a yellowish Indian Silverbill?

Hi Aladdin!

No worries! Glad that you managed to find Arabian Babbler.

It’s quite usual to find Indian Silverbill of different colors. Actually they are caught by some people (Indians or Pakistani), who catch them, paint them and release them. I do not really know why they are doing that, but I have seen some in different occasions of different colors (pink, green, red…) in different places, where there are labours working in the fields or parks….

I left the Yellow Indian Silverbill and I was puzzled, but as we can see above. I got the explanation from my Guide via e-mail. Coming out on the South side of the Al Mamzar Beach Park and I walk along the south side waterfront. I spot a Bittern but when I go back to get the sun from behind for pictures the bird take off

I take some pictures of the Rose-ringed Parakeet and I manage to get a second recording of the bird. It is a nice but very noisy bird. So get a recording is not any problem, well, there is a lot of crows and people making background noises.

And to take pictures means that I have to walk around among pick-nick baskets and blankets.

Going back to the gate

I start to feel down, I have a seat and I decide to go back to the hotel. Back at my room and I fall asleep and I feel better when I wake up. But by then it is too late to go looking at birds at the Ras al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary. Well, better to stay in my room so I feel better tomorrow and I will be full of vim when I go to look for birds.

I go to ask for an Italian restaurant but there is only a steak house at Radisson Blu Dubai Waterfront and this area of Dubai just have a Mini Mart close by. So I have a steak, expensive and not so very good. So I made a mental note to never go back there again.

Dinner at Radisson Blu Dubai Waterfront - 80 US Dollars

Sick today, but I have planned to start in Mushrif Park tomorrow and if I have the time I will visit the Ras al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary in the afternoon.

Well, I hope I feel better tomorrow, the dinner at Radisson Blu Dubai Waterfront didn´t make me feel any better. But I was suffering from agony and remorse.

Anyway, the alarm is set to go off at 3 thirty tomorrow and we just need to click HERE to find out id I find any birds at the Mushrif Park tomorrow.
