Aladdin's adventure aboard M/T Roy Maersk

Saturday 21st of September 2013 and they called me at 1 o'clock in the morning. I had asked them to call me 2 hours before the pilot. Day light mooring ONLY and ETB at 09:00 and I had expected to be called around 6 o'clock, earliest at 5 o'clock. I needed some time to prepare on deck, but it was pitch dark and I put my alarm to go off at 2. I changed the alarm to 2 thirty Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stwhen the alarm went off at 2 o'clock, but they knocked on my door 20 minutes past 2 or something like that.

Information was requested and I went for a shower. It only took us a few minutes to heave up the mooring hawser from the SPM and we had all fast at 04:32 and all paper work was ready around 06 thirty.

We had to wait for shore to be ready and we didn't start loading until it was almost Aladdin's adventure aboard M/T Roy Maersk11 o'clock and was in bed at 1 o'clock in the afternoon.

By then I was so tired it was impossible to fall asleep and I only had about 3 hours of sleep when I woke up at 5 o'clock. A shower and I went to the CCR to see how the heating of the water in the slop tank was going. And then I could as well have my dinner.

And I had ice cream, a huge setback for my diet and I will not have any ice cream again, at least I hope so. My diet had been nothing but an disappointment so far. But our “after the dinner movie” Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stturned out to be a success. The first good “after the dinner movie” since I joined the ship, 21 Jump Street.

I was dead tired but I failed to fall asleep and they called me at 23:30, time to complete the loading. A hot shower and my vitamin tablets and I was off the the CCR.

+++++++++++++++
Sunday 22nd of September 2013
and we completed loading at 00:18 and we discharged the water and we were ready around 2 thirty. The paper work started and they were making the B/L with a type writer. I had told them that it was not allowed to put any of their USB sticks in our network.
- We don't want any viruses
- My computer don't have virus, I guarantee
- If I had a cent every time I heard that...
Our 2nd Officer told me he could not believe his ears when he heard the type writer

Old school typing

All paper work was completed around 5 o'clock and pilot will be on board at 6. One hour of waiting and I could really use some sleep. I set my alarm to go off 15 minutes after 12 and I was in bed Aladdin's adventure aboard M/T Roy Maerskjust before 7 o'clock in the morning. I was tired, as I had planned for, when the alarm went off quarter past 12. I will Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st Hopefully be able to fall asleep tonight now when I woke up tired.

A quick lunch and I kept myself busy until almost 6 o'clock in the evening with discharge plan, cargo heating and vetting preparation. And there isn't much time as we arrive around lunch time tomorrow.

Dinner, yes, I'm unlucky, it is a real nice crew and I enjoy sitting talking with them. But I can't resist eating while in the mess room and I will give it another try tomorrow with black bread with cheese and tea only. If I fail I will stay away from the mess room in the future.

Our Cadets wanted to see Matrix after dinner and they were in the slop chest preparing for the movie by getting chocolate. I just took a picture and I left without any chocolate. I went for a shower and we started the movie around 7 o'clock.

+++++++++++++++
Monday 23rd of September 2013
and we had an STS meeting on the bridge at 8, and yes, I was full of vim. I managed to fall asleep around 10 o'clock. Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st Or was it 11?

Never mind, I was sleeping until 7 twenty when my alarm went off. I prepared deck for vetting and discharging with the crew. Not much time, Pilot came on board at 13:28 and we had all fast at Amity Star at 14:42. Loading Master and Surveyor was on board at 15 thirty and we could start with the paper work.

We were approaching Amity Star when I came on the bridge and her name was in Thai on the bow and I was soon seeing the Thai flag. But the Surveyor was from Singapore and the Loading Master was from China.

Chief Officer and the Captain was from China and they had crew Organics Australia Online from Thailand and Bangladesh.

They started by taking the ullages and I had expected them to start with the samples. But they guy that was supposed to be in charge of the sampling was on another ship. Our Surveyor gave up waiting 20 past 5 when we had finished all the paper work and he went on deck to take the samples by himself.

That's the spirit we're looking for. I had a chance for a very quick dinner while he was on deck taking samples. Non-stop action since 8 o'clock this very morning and no time to sit down relax, I had what must have been the fastest lunch ever, good for the diet. And the dinner was a few glasses of tea and our Cook's EXCELLENT homemade “BLACK” bread.

We had to wait until 19:42 until they were ready to receive the cargo and it was almost 9 o'clock when I was back in my cabin. I watched a few of the Learn Thai with Mod and the Alif Silpachai videos before I went to bed with my Thai books.

Tuesday 24th of September 2013
and I had time for both tea and freshly made black bread before we completed discharging. We blew the cargo lines and we completed everything quarter Aladdin's adventure aboard M/T Roy Maerskto 10 o'clock.

We prepared our deck for loading as soon as we had completed the blowing. New check lists and we had to test all the equipment before we could start loading.

And it didn't go any quicker having Amity Star calling on the radio all the time asking when they could start. As I asked Captain:
- Did you hear their high level alarm go off?

We keep our standard and we follow procedures and test all the equipment before loading. And they wanted to start before we had made the pre transfer documentations, ship to ship check list, pre transfer Aladdin's adventure aboard M/T Roy Maerskagreement etc. But I refused and I sent over the documents for signing when they had got me an MSDS as required before we can start receive the cargo.

We commenced loading of the first parcel at 11:36 and I was off for what must have been the quickest lunch in history. I was soon back in my office to prepare the discharge plan.

When we're ready with Amity Star we have about an hour to the pilot station in Singapore and there won't be much time to prepare for anything. So I'm better off being ONE STEP AHEAD. I was interrupted when they called from Amity Star. They had a bunch of girls from their Singapore office Aladdin's adventure aboard M/T Roy Maerskon board and they wanted to get ashore.

There was another ship arriving to Amity Star this morning so they needed to lift the girls to our ship and the service launch would pick them up at our ship.

I went out to investigate together with our Cadet. Not every day we got a load of girls Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.ston board, and of course, when they caught sight of SUPER SWEDE they were all giggling and waving to me.

Our Cadet was soon losing interest and he returned to clean the windows to the CCR and I returned to my discharge plan in the office. I up dated our ballast logs ETC to prepare for the vetting. But there isn't much time left for preparation for the vetting. Discharging and loading and Aladdin's adventure aboard M/T Roy Maersknot many hours between the ports.

But time turns quick and I like it, as long as there is time for a power nap or two. And yes, I managed to find the time to write an e-mail to wrist about snus, 100 cans of General snus would be nice.

I ran in to our Cadets and they were planning for our future dinners. One of our Cadets are a former professional Cook so he Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stknows his way around the kitchen. And I think it is him that thought out Cook to bake the excellent bread he is doing. Our Cadets will take care of the dinner in the future and it will be Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stdinner at 7 o'clock instead of at 5 thirty. And they are from Denmark so it will be like the Stable Lodge in Bangkok.

Steak,a t first I blamed it on cheap good for nothing meat they sent to the ships, but last Saturday when our Cadet did the steak it was excellent so I'm looking forward to next Saturday.

It was almost 8 when we completed the first parcel and we started the last parcel an hour later and it looks like I can get a full night's sleep, very good. I had expected to complete loading around midnight and then we would have a full night of job with no sleep.

+++++++++++++++
Wednesday 25th of September 2013
and I was happy when my alarm went off at 7 twenty. That means we're still loading and I had not been called during the night. I called the CCR before my Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stshower and it turned out that there had been some stoppages during the night, good. Sleep is always welcome, never know when I get the next opportunity.

I had my vitamins with my lemon flavored magnesium FIZZ drink before I stepped in to the shower. It is the best thing, a hot shower in the morning. I was a wee bit tired but I was full of vim when I came out from the shower. OK, I was not turning cartwheels out of the Aladdin's adventure aboard M/T Roy Maerskshower, but there was a remarkable difference from going in and out from the shower.

I went to the CCR before I went for my breakfast and they told me that we would be ready around 2 o'clock in the Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stafternoon. I went for my pot of tea and 2 slices of black bread with cheese.

I was soon back in the CCR and I needed to go down to the pump room to calibrate our oxygen detector before Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stthe vetting tomorrow. No vetting allowed at SHELL Bokum during the dark ours and there is no way we will make it before the evening. So it will not be until tomorrow.

We prepared our stuff and I went down with our 2nd Officer and he adjusted the oxygen sensor while I was checking around in the pump room. And when we were ready, yes, I had had the crew to mop water from the pump room a few days ago. But when we Aladdin's adventure aboard M/T Roy Maerskwere ready there was water coming down Singapore weatherthe pump room and we discovered that it had started to rain. The sky had literally opened up and it was pouring down.

As soon as we were back on deck we closed the hatch and we hope the heat from the cargo will dry the pump room.

Our Cadet was busy at my computer and I went to check out what he was doing, an invitation and menu for next Saturdays “happening” Next Saturday, I don't even know what day it is, busy 24 foocking 7 and it is hard to keep track. But time passes very quickly.

We had to measure our tanks for H2S and we had 0 PPM in all tanks except CT 6 and 7 where we had between 2 and 3PPM. I wanted to double check these 4 tanks for our test tubes. An excellent opportunity for our Cadet and 2nd Officer to get some “test tube” experience.

We prepared the stuff and we went to CT 7 Stb and we filled a bag with gas from the tank. Our 2nd Officer and Cadet took a sample with the pump and test tube.

We sampled the tank and we didn't found any H2S and as I didn't want to disappoint our Cadet I brought out a bottle of sample gas when we were back in the CCR. He filled a sample bag with gas and now he could see the test tune react with the H2S, what a success this turned out to be. I Aladdin's adventure aboard M/T Roy Maerskdon't think our Cadet will ever forget the first time using the test tube.

I went for yet another record breaking lunch. I hardly had time to sit down before it was time to get out on deck to check the draft. Maximum draft 11.3 meters and I need to be on deck to stop the loading when we reach 11.3 meters draft.

Of course, almost impossible to read the draft with the waves breaking over the bow. We completed loading at 13:06 and there was a cubic ton of paper work coming my way.

Suddenly it was time for dinner, time is pretty quick when you're busy 24 foocking 7. Wonder how it is for the guys on board Amity Star, they have been anchored for more than 1 year. I spoke Aladdin's adventure aboard M/T Roy Maerskwith one of the Thai ABs yesterday and he could not believe his ears when I started to speak Thai with him. He had been on board for one Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.styear, yes, ONE YEAR.
- Then you must have a shit load of money!

The Loading Master and Surveyor left us and they came back a few hours later with the B/L and the other paper work and everything was completed around 19 thirty and by now we were in a hurry in order to be at Singapore Pilot @ 21:00

Pilot was booked for 20:00 but he was not onboard until 20 minutes after that. Pilot in Singapore booked for 21:00 so we will see if we can make it in time, it is just a few miles to Singapore pilot station. Anchoring for the immigration and then the terminal is ready to take us along side. But Captain decided to stay anchored during the night so we could get some rest. Our rest hours would have turned red and a safe operation in peril.

+++++++++++++++
Thursday 26th of September 2013
and my alarm went off at 7 twenty and I had time to do some tests and vetting preparations before the Pilot came on board at 8 thirty. When we arrived to SHELL Bokum we had 2 Safety officers coming on board and they were so impressed that we had been waiting at the anchorage to get some rest.

They sent their regards from SHELL Operation and they had been very impressed by the decision to stay anchored. Our Vetting inspector was not less impressed.
- More ships should do it like that!

We started to discharge at 14:30 and it was soon time to go for an inspection round on deck with the Vetting inspector and it was way past dinner time when we were ready on deck. I told the Vetting inspector to have a quick dinner while I was preparing the entry permit and risk assessment for the pump room entry. I went to the mess room to get our Vetting Inspector and he told me to have something to eat.
- I wish I had the time. Let's go kick ass in the pump room
Seriously, I can't remember the last time I had time to sit down eating any meal. Well, not to sit down more than a very short time.

When we came back up from the pump room we had a look at my paper work and the equipment in the CCR. But first I got out of my boiler suit and it was very nice to get out of the boiler suit and safety shoes. He looked pleased with my paper work and I was off for a shower.

We were talking about the good ol' times in the conference room, our Superintendent, Vetting Inspector and I when our Chief Engineer came to ask if anyone wanted tea or coffee.
- I'm boiling water in my cabin

I came up with an idea to make a “cozy corner” in my cabin with a water boiler, a few Milobarrels of Milo and a tea cup when our Vetting Inspector had left us. He left 20 minutes past 9 in the evening and we had one observation on deck. Use of plastic half drum instead of metal drums when draining the manifold. So yes, it was a good vetting.

Metal drums instead of plastic, never heard before. Well, Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st thinking of it. I think we ordered metal drums with bonding wires on one ship I was on. I'm pretty sure it was for the manifolds. Well, anyway, I will make this an item on my check list. Always learning something new, always improving the cargo plan.

The Vetting was a pre time charter vetting and the Inspector told us that they would most likely use the ship for CPP between Indonesia - Subic Bay, Philippines and Singapore. Sounds great to me. He said good bye and he hoped that we would get the time charter.

I brought our Vetting Inspector down and we said good bye and I went to pick up stuff for my “cozy corner” I stopped at the conference room for a chat with Captain, Chief Engineer and the Superintendent. I looked at the Chief Engineer holding up one can of Milo. One can hidden in my pocket, embarrassing to come up with 2 cans.
- Look what you have done! Inspiring me to boil water
Captain threw himself in to the discussion.
- You need to fill your cup up to here! He said pointing somewhere half way up the cup.
- And you have to add sugar and milk powder or it taste like

I had to told him to calm down.
- We have a Maersk representative on board and all this sounds expensive, imagine his report to the office! A tea spoon is enough
- No, the best is to open the can and pour a few drops of water in it
Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stWell, my “cozy corner” plan back fired BIG TIME. I finished 1 can of Milo the first evening, and I realized that calories is not anything less than calories even though I'm drinking them. It is not water.

Well, vetting is over and it is soon time to get time for the crew to get some work done on deck. We will be back to Kerteh to load the LSWR. So there will not be much time for anything, but it is Japan for order so we might get something done on the way to Japan.

And I really hope that there will be time for my Thai books, so far exactly ZIP. And of course, I wish for some time with the Learn Thai with Mod and the Alif Silpachai videos.

+++++++++++++++
Friday 27th of September 2013
and it was 1 thirty in the morning when I left the CCR and by then
G!

Are you getting my e-mails. I'm sending from another e-mail address and you're sending e-mail to the coolest e-mail address in the world! Seems like half of my e-mails from my NOT SO COOL e-mail address don't reach the recipients
I had been up and about since 7 thirty in the morning, 18 hours NON STOP with standing up eating lunch and dinner.

Well, I woke up at 10 o'clock and I went straight for my vitamins and my lemon flavored magnesium “FIZZ” drink. A hot shower and then straight to my “cozy corner” for a hot chocolate drink. I was in the middle of my second “Chocolate Surprise” when they called from the CCR. Help was required and I dashed off leaving Aladdin's adventure aboard M/T Roy Maerskhalf of my “Chocolate Surprise” on my desk.

I'm seriously thinking that the “Chocolate Surprise” can be the best thing ever happened Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st to my diet in a long time. Our Cadet was at my computer doing next weeks menu when I burst in to the CCR.

Our Cadet will be in the kitchen next week to assist our Cook. It is bad enough all ready and he is going to make things worse. It is like Christmas dinner every day and now our Cadet will add on top off this. Well, I have to get serious and as soon as my cubic ton of Milo are coming to an end I will close down my “cozy corner”

We sorted out our 3rd Officer problem and I was soon back to my “Chocolate Surprise” which was finished in a jiff and I was back in the CCR to make a cargo calculation. 170.000 Bbls in Kerteh
Joe

Maybe something for you. Change the boring blue boxes for white boxes and it is like walking in to a wall of light every time entering the stores
Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stand Japan for order

But I stopped in the galley where the Cook and Mess Man were preparing yet another Christmas dinner on my way back to the cabin.

Our Cook and Mess Man had ordered white boxes for the store room and it was like walking in to a wall of light coming in to the stores. These guys are really interested in keeping the galley “Ship Aladdin's adventure aboard M/T Roy Maerskshape” Of course it takes an interesting Captain. But this Captain and the Captain I worked with on board Cassandra and Claudia was on top of things.

The other Captains were most interested in watching movies and the kitchen crew wrote 13 hours per day serving fish heads. But here it is a different story, and on board Cassandra and Claudia it was excellent.

And today was the first time since joining Roy Maersk that I opened my Thai books. I completed the books after lunch and I will most likely have the time for the Learn Thai with Mod and the Alif Silpachai videos.

Well, we were soon busy again and I was not in bed until 3 o'clock in the morning. So no time for the Learn Thai with Mod and the Alif Silpachai videos. I was in my cabin after dinner minding my Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stown business. Discharging had been stopped since 15:06 in the afternoon and no one knew when we could start again. Now they wanted us to resume discharging and we expected about 2 hours to complete discharging.

The whiteboard in our CCR don't look very nice. I had made a IG valve plan to show what’s open and closed in Word and laminated it. It was on the white board looking PRETTY good. So I decided to make a chart for the DIPPING results in the same manner. I erased the chart from the white board, not very successful as they had made it with permanent marker. But much of it disappeared with the white board marker.

Our 2nd Officer stripped the tanks while I made the dipping charts, one for ballast tanks and one for the cargo tanks. It was done in a jiff and our Cadet went to laminate the documents.

Our Cadet was soon back from the bridge with the freshly laminated DIPPING charts. Instant disappointment, he had laminated them upside down.
Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st - What the Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st
- I'm sorry!
- No problem!
Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stChief Officer instantly came up with the idea of the century, well, at least for the day.
- We put them up up side down and it will be OK!

Our Cadet looked at the white board and he wasn't pleased with my cleaning.
- I will have one of my best men to clean it tomorrow
Our Cadet decided to try our alcohol hand cleaner and I was surprised, the permanent marker Aladdin's adventure aboard M/T Richard Maerskdisappeared in a jiff. Something for our 2nd Officer on Richard Maersk. Someone had taken notes with a permanent market on the whiteboard.

The white board was covered with red permanent ink and he was desperately trying everything. He started with my Diet MAX
- Hold it right there Buddy Boy, don't waste my Diet MAX! We don't have very much!
Aladdin's adventure aboard M/T Richard Maersk

He was soon trying Mosquito repellent and he wasn't more successful with the mosquito repellent than he had been with my Diet MAX

He went on and on rubbing the white board until it was turned pink. The writing was gone, but I think it was more due to friction than any of the stuff he tried. Well, that’s how they operate on board Richard Maersk. Here we use hand cleaner and the permanent marker was gone in a jiff.

We completed discharging at 19:48 and now we started with the tank inspection and paper work and our Surveyors left us around 10 o'clock in the evening. We would soon leave, someone told me Pilot was for 23:00. But now the long wait for the shore documents started.

Saturday 28th of September 2013
and we left SHELL Bukom at 02:25. Way too late and I was dead tired when I was in bed at 3 o'clock. Soon time to get up again as we will have a Technician for our cargo valves coming on board at the anchorage. He was on board at SHELL but he could not do any work as we were discharging and thus using the valves.

Aladdin's adventure on board M/T Roy Maersk in Singapore
Leaving SHELL Bukom behind

Document wasn't on board until 1 thirty so we were very late and there wasn't very much time for sleeping. But I turned of my alarm even though the Technician would be on board at 8.
- Call me when he arrives!
Smart move, Chief engineer called me at 08:45
Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st - YO! Technician on board
Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st - I'm coming, I just have a shower Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st

But I had to have my vitamins and the lemon flavored magnesium “FIZZ” drink before the shower Aladdin's adventure on board M/T Roy Maersk in Singaporeand after that I was ready for action.

We expect to leave the anchorage at 13:30. They were about to complete the bunkering when I came down to the CCR. Our Technician and I started with the valves right away. Our 2nd Officer and Pump Man helped us.

Saturday and our Cadets were busy cooking in the galley and I went to inspect the area a few times while having a few seconds over from the valve work. They are making PULLED PORK, don't ask me what it is, but every time you mention PULLED PORK the Danish starts drooling. So it must be something good and it has been in the oven for 12 hours ++

They are making homemade ice cream and something we started a fight over. They call it Danish and I said that it is from Sweden.
- It is from Denmark
Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st- You can’t add a Danish pronunciation to a Swedish dish and call it Danish!
Aladdin's adventure on board M/T Roy Maersk- But it is from Denmark!
- NO!!! Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st

Our Technician had managed to fix many of the valves when it was time for him to leave. And he missed the spare parts for the remaining valves, but we will Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st hopefully fix this next time in Singapore.

All valves working, but some indicators are not showing the right position of the valve.

I was off to bed as soon as the Technician was off the ship, of course, almost impossible to fall asleep. I only had 30 minutes or something of sleep before my alarm went of at 16:20. And I was still tired.

I had time to update my web page before dinner as we had our dinner at 7 today and our Cadets had done some excellent food and the ice cream was like the best ever. We finished our dinner with a movie, Matrix 2 and this turned out to be the worst video in a very long time. It was a pain watching the darn thing and I could have used the time for my Thai books and the Learn Thai with Mod and the Alif Silpachai videos instead.

Well, we have got discharging port confirmed, Chiba in Japan and that's 10 to 11 days and I will Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st hopefully get the time to get started on the way to Japan.

Sunday 29th of September 2013
and I woke up at 9 thirty and I was met by the news of that berthing on arrival was cancelled. We expect to arrive to Kerteh at 11 o'clock. Everything is ready in the CCR except the pre arrival tests. I had planned for the tests after 10 but now I postponed the tests and I spent some extra time in my “cozy corner” But this will be my last can of Milo.

We watched Matrix 3 after lunch and what a waste of time. But as we said when we were ready:
- Now we never have to see this shit again!
I was in bed just before 4 o'clock in the afternoon for an hour of power nap. I had just got to bed when they called. Pilot at 18:00, good, finally some action around here.
Aladdin's adventure on board M/T Roy Maersk in Kerteh, Malaysia
Loading Master look out for the SPM while we approach the SPM and the rain

Pilot, Loading Master and Surveyor was on board just a few minutes before 6 o'clock. We did some paper work in my office while we're approaching the buoy. We went forward to bring up the chain. It was black over the coast line and heavy rain was falling over shore just 2000 meters away. We ha d a few drops coming on us. Our Loading Master told me that it would hit us in a few minutes.
- I think it goes the other way, I said
- For sure, it will hit us!

We were lucky and the rain never came over us and the chain was secured forward at 19:00. I was back in my office with dry clothes and as soon as the cargo hose were connected I did paper Aladdin's adventure on board M/T Roy Maersk in Kerteh, Malaysiawork with the Loading Master and Surveyor. 21:05 and we were ready, now we just have to wait for shore to be ready and I Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stwent for a quick cuppa in the “cozy corner”

Waiting and an hour were soon turning in to one and a half hour and it was soon midnight and I was tired. I spent the time waiting watching video but I only had one cup of chocolate.
But at least we won't be ready until tomorrow afternoon and I can sleep all morning.

Monday 30th of September 2013
and I was out of bed quarter past 1 o'clock in the afternoon. I was back in my cabin at 3 o'clock in the morning and I had 8 to 9 hours of NON STOP sleep. Very good, well, will be hard to fall asleep tonight.
