Aladdin's adventure on board M/T Roy Mærsk/ Roy Maersk

Sunday 16th of October 2016 and the slop barge was alongside at 08:06 and we started to discharge the slop at 09:12. It took 2 hours and on top of that we did a one hour tank cleaning. Aladdin's adventure on board M/T Roy Mærsk/ Roy MaerskSlop barge on port side and we were soon having the bunker barge on the starboard side.

On top of that we got stores and provision so we were pretty busy during the day.

We got the guys on board that was going to measure the thickness in our tanks on board together with some other service people.

+++++++++++++++
Monday 17th of October 2016
and we started the day with tool box and safety meeting. Good morning gymnastics were cancelled as we had our tank measurement guys on board. But we had time for our “walking in stairs” and the “walking with safety harness” exercises.

We also notice our newly on signed AB reading all the safety information and risk assessments

Lloyd's Inspectors came on board just before lunch and one of them came down in the tanks with the steel measurement guys. When Lloyds left us at 5 o'clock in the afternoon they had done 5 tanks. So we will have to continue tomorrow, a wee bit of excitement to look forward to.

Vava'u Villas
Vava'u Villas tent

Hey Aladdin,

I wanted to update you. I just decided (today) to go with the Villas new Camping Tents. I have attached some very early stage pictures of what they will look like here. They are much nicer and much more appealing than the other rooms (pic attached). Each tent will have their own bathroom.

It's also much easier to ward off mold in the tens vs the rooms, as mold is a huge issue in Tonga, due to the humidity.

Please let me know you are fine with this.

Best,
Nadia

The most exciting happening here since we arrived to Singapore is an e-mail from Tonga. They are going for new tents so my humpback whale adventure will also be a camping adventure. Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st

Tuesday 18th of October 2016
and a full day of entry permits and gas measuring. And no internet, they are changing the whole IT system on board, new computers, well, everything is changed for new. Monitors, computers, key boards etc. and someone have made some good money on this.

My M1 card is empty, I topped up 5,5 GB + 18 S$ and it was all finished in less than 24 hours. And yes, I was upset and I called M1 and asked them what kind of scam they were running. And of course, not like other networks which gives a 10 or 20 minutes free time so you can top up on the internet.

But not M1 and a made a mental note not to buy any more of their sim cards. I'm struggle to use 150MB on board and M1, 5,5 GB plus the 18 S$ gone like an aspirin. BAM! And it was zero remaining on the sim card.

Wednesday 19th of October 2016
and it was a full day with entry permits again. Well, almost, the Lloyd Inspector didn't came on board until almost lunch time so we had a few hours wasted Aladdin's adventure on board M/T Roy Mærsk/ Roy Maerskduring the morning. The new CEO for Maersk Tankers was in Singapore with the Chief Economical something and they wanted to come on board to see the ship.

Of course, I was busy and I didn't had the time to see them. But they caught a glimpse of me in the SkåneCCR and they were happy for this opportunity. And the Chief Economical Officer turned out to speak Skånska, so Flag of Skånethat was a pleasant surprise.

Of course, when these people were on board it was white table cloth in the mess room and our Cook, well, he was dressed like I had never seen him before.

We managed to finish “almost” all the tanks, only DB 2 remaining for Friday when the Lloyds will be back on board. Of course, something we're looking forward to. We are not afraid of adventures and excitements here on board Roy Maersk.

and no Pepsi light or Pepsi MAX outside my door when I left my cabin to go to the CCR. No Pepsi in the CCR, what the....? A few of our crew had been ashore yesterday and I had asked them to buy 2 cases of diet Pepsi and a Canon G16 camera for me.

Well, still not possible for me to participate in the good morning gymnastics and our Pump Man was leading the good morning session. When they were ready, well, I don't remember, but our OS Diet Pepsi in Singaporecame down form the bridge and he told me that the 3rd Officer had bought 66 Diet Pepsi for me yesterday
- Where are they? I asked
- In his cabin
Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st- What the Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st? BRING EM DOWN! DOUBLE QUICK!

I was soon having two cans of Diet Pepsi going in the CCR. But they ha don’t been able to find any Canon G16. Just what I had suspected. I have been looking for the camera on line but I have come up with ZIP. So no more pictures from Roy Maersk! I will keep my Canon G16 in my cabin as I need it for my SEA & SEA underwater house.

I will leave it to Canon in Bangkok when I'm back home for re conditioning. My cameras are usually Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.sttaking a lot of everything not so good for the camera. Anyway, I will save my Canon G16 Powershot for my future snorkelling adventures with or without whales.

I cannot go ashore because of the pain, but if someone goes ashore I will ask them to buy a Canon PowerShot G 7 X Mark II for me, a new Canon compact camera and we will soon have pictures from Roy Maersk again.

and as our 4th Engineer didn't manage to find the Canon G 7 X Mark II yesterday we will have to enjoy this day without pictures. But I finished with Lloyd's today so I'm happy. And my TOP GUNS are going ashore tonight keeping an eye out for the Canon PowerShot G16 and the Canon PowerShot G 7 X Mark II tonight.

Saturday 22nd of October 2016
and I was up until way past 1 o'clock in the morning waiting for the crew to return. I gave up and I went to bed. I met them in the CCR in th emorning and they had not managed to get the cameras. OK, the PowerShot G 16, I had not expected them to find that camera. But the Canon PowerShot G 7 X Mark II was out of stock. So no pictures from Roy Maersk for a while.

The Canon PowerShot G 16 that I have will go to reconditioning when I'm back in Bangkok. I hope that Canon can do a good job and I will have a “AS GOOD AS NEW” Canon G 16 when I go to Tonga next year. But I have not given up on finding a new Canon G 16.

FINALLY SATURDAY again!!! Time for a Saturday afternoon fun video

I had been in Captain’s cabin and we had killed 2 hours talking about the good ol' times. Our Chief Engineer came in and he asked why I wasn't at the hospital. He and Captain talked me in to go Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stashore to see a Doctor for my leg. 10 minutes later our Captain had called a service boat and I went for a shower.

The boat should be here quarter to 6, so I will miss the dinner. DARN! It is Saturday so I will miss my “allowed” meal. But at least we have the Saturday fun video to enjoy. Anyway, while waiting I checked internet for a shop selling the Canon PowerShot G 7 X Mark II. I found a shop Canon PowerShot G 7 X Mark IIat Ngee Ann City Podium on Orchard Road. Best Denki and I called them, they had the camera, but not the PowerShot G16.

I asked when they closed and they are open until 22:00 so I hope I have the time to visit the shop. I also hope that I have time to have some dinner, but of course, most of all I hope for my leg to get better.

And the boat was late and that didn't help my chances to get to buy the camera very much. And the dinner, I was already prepared to go hungry until I was back on board again, Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st hopefully not too late tonight. I really don't want to spend the night at a hospital. Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st

We arrived to the South Marina Pier in Singapore and there was a long queue to the immigration. By now I had a hard time to stand on my leg and I was crawling through the immigration. When I passed the immigration there was a lady asking if I was Aladdin. Yeah, I was the only one crawling through the immigration looking like I was going to the hospital.

She never introduced herself and after 35 seconds I had heard so much about my leg and the reason for the pain. Ulric acid and I don't everything she said.
- WHOA WHOA! You have diagnosed me already so now I can get back on board!

She took me to a van and it turned out that she was some kind of medical coordinator. She will bring me to the Doctor and back again. Good service.

We arrived to the CITYMED on Keppel Road 10 minutes later or so and I was surprised that I could see the Doctor pretty much right away. And I was alarmed instantly as the Doctor thought Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stthat I was going to die!

He said that he wanted to send me to scan my leg. But we went for the option with a blood sample that he would send for analyse. He had a small scanner and he scanned my calf. He checked and Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stmeasured my leg and the right leg, the whole thing is a wee bit swollen. He gave me a shot in the behind, and of course, I was documenting everything.

CITYMED in Singapore
Here we go

Some of the pictures went straight to the garbage. And you will have to take my word for it, but CITYMED in Singaporeyou should be happy never to have to see the pictures. Pure ghastliness is the best CITYMED in Singaporedescription of the pictures. Hell, the pictures even made me Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stsick!

We spent an hour or so at CITYMED and I thought we were ready so I could go to Ngee Ann City on Orchard Road to buy the camera. But the Doctor was sending me across Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.sttown to another hospital to get an X-ray of the right knee. I was now almost sure that I would miss the DEAD LINE to reach Ngee Ann City and the closing time of Best Denki.

The Doctor prepared the paper work and medicines while I was calling all the camera shops in Singapore. All shops were out of the PowerShot G 16 and it was only Best Denki at Ngee Ann City West Point hospital in Singaporethat had the Canon PowerShot G 7 X Mark II that I wanted.

We were soon back in the van driving towards the west. I interrogated the “medical co-ordinator” and she thought that we might have a chance to reach the camera shop before 10

I was in the back calling different camera shops while driving towards the West Point Hospital. But it was Ngee Ann City or nothing. I have found the PowerShot Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stG16 in Japan so I will have to order this model from Japan. And this will be yet another parcel going to our Agent in Singapore.

We arrived to West point Hospital at 20 thirty and the “medical co-ordinator” was sweet talking the staff and I was in the X-ray room after 10 minutes or so of waiting.

During this time I had the time to experience a fire alarm, but it turned out to be a false alarm. At least according to a voice from loudspeakers in the ceiling.

I took the escalators up on the 5th floor and it looked like everything was closed. A LEGO shop was open and no sign of any camera shop. I was limping around looking for the shop. I entered a “Electronic Fair”. I called the shop to ask for the name. I had forgot the name and I was in the “Electronic Fair” and I spoke with the girl on the phone.

My ears are not what they used to be so I'm talking quite loud. I looked around and there was a girl looking at me laughing. It was the girl I was talking to and I was in the right shop. She could hear me talking without the phone.

I got my Canon PowerShot G 7 X Mark II and I limped down to the taxi stand. Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st

I was surprised to see plenty taxis and not a lot of people waiting. So I would soon be on my way back to South Marina Pier. I was soon in a service launch on the way back to Roy Maersk. The driver, OK, I just felt sorry for him. He don't have much salary and the only reason for him to be here is because he is cheap.

It was the worst experience I have ever had on a service launch in Singapore. Safety first, looks good on a poster, this guy was for sure not having any skills driving this boat. And he was ZIG ZAGGING around looking for Roy Maersk. I told him where to go, but he refused to listen.

I woke up 1 o'clock with pain in my leg and I had a pain killer. I was soon back in bed sleeping and I slept until Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.stthey called me. Pilot was on board and I was on the bridge at 7 thirty.

All fast at Chevron jetty #3 at 8 fifty and we started to load at 11:06. Our Cook wanted to go ashore with the Mess Man and the painters after lunch. So they had to fill up some paper work before they could leave. And they were carrying “juice for my e-cig” instructions.

Bryde's whale

Bryde's whale or the Bryde's whale complex (/bruːdə/brew-də) putatively comprises two species of rorqual and maybe three. The "complex" means the number and classification remains unclear because of a lack of definitive information and research. The common Bryde's whale (Balaenoptera brydei, Olsen, 1913) is a larger form that occurs worldwide in warm temperate and tropical waters, and the Sittang or Eden's whale (B. edeni, Anderson, 1879) is a smaller form that may be restricted to the Indo-Pacific.
Also, a smaller, coastal form of B. brydei is found off southern Africa, and perhaps another form in the Indo-Pacific differs in skull morphology, tentatively referred to as the Indo-Pacific Bryde's whale. The recently described Omura's whale (B. omurai, Wada et al. 2003), was formerly considered a "pygmy" form of Bryde's, but is now recognized as a distinct species.

B. brydei gets its specific and common name from Johan Bryde, Norwegian consul to South Africa who helped establish the first modern whaling station in the country, while B. edeni gets its specific and common name from Sir Ashley Eden, former High Commissioner of Burma (Myanmar). Sittang whale refers to the type locality of the species. In Thailand, locals distinguished Sittang whales different from B.edeni, and it is unclear whether Sittang whales were applied for later classified Omura's whales by locals.

Bryde's Whale

Members of the Bryde's whale complex are moderately sized rorquals, falling behind sei whales, but being larger than Omura's whale and the relatively small minke whales. The largest measured by Olsen (1913) was a 14.95 m female caught off Durban in November 1912, while the longest of each sex measured by Best (1977) at the Donkergat whaling station in Saldanha Bay, South Africa, were a 15.51 m female caught in October 1962 and a 14.56 m male caught in April 1963; both were the offshore form.

At physical maturity, the coastal form off South Africa averages 13.1 m for males and 13.7 m for females, while the South Africa offshore form averages 13.7 and 14.4 m. The coastal form near Japan is slightly smaller, with adult males averaging 12.9 m and adult females 13.3 m.

At sexual maturity, males average 11.9 m and females 12 m near Japan. Sexual maturity is reached at 8–11 years for both sexes in the offshore form off South Africa. At birth, they are 3.95–4.15 m. The body mass of Bryde's whales can range 12–25 metric tons.

Bryde's Whale
Bryde's whale range

Bryde's whale is a baleen whale, more specifically a rorqual belonging to the same group as blue whales and humpback whales. It has twin blowholes with a low splashguard to the front. Like other rorquals, it has no teeth, but has two rows of baleen plates.

Bryde's whales closely resemble their close relative the sei whale. They are remarkably elongated (even more so than fin whales), with the greatest height of the body being one-seventh their total length – compared to 1/6.5 to 1/6.75 in fin whales and only 1/5.5 in sei whales. Bryde's are dark smoky grey dorsally and usually white ventrally, whereas sei whales are often a galvanized blue-grey dorsally and have a variably sized white patch on the throat, a posteriorly oriented white anchor-shaped marking between the pectoral fins, and are blue-grey beyond the anus – although Bryde's off South Africa can have a similar irregular white patch on the throat.

Whales of the world

Bryde's have a straight rostrum with three longitudinal ridges that extend from the blowholes, where the auxiliary ridges begin as depressions, to the tip of the rostrum. The sei whale, like other rorquals, has a single median ridge, as well as a slightly arched rostrum, which is accentuated at the tip. Bryde's usually have dark grey lower jaws, whereas sei whales are lighter grey. Bryde's have 250–370 pairs of short, slate grey baleen plates with long, coarse, lighter grey or white bristles that are 40 cm long by 20 cm wide, while sei whales have longer, black or dark grey baleen plates with short, curling, wool-like bristles.

The 40 to 70 ventral pleats extend to or past the umbilicus, occupying about 58% and 57% of the total length, respectively; sei whales, though, have ventral pleats that extend only halfway between the pectoral fins and umbilicus, occupying only 45-47% of the total body length, whereas their umbilicus is usually 52% of the total body length. Both species are often covered with white or pink oval scars caused by bites from cookie-cutter sharks.

Bryde's whales have an upright, falcate dorsal fin that is up to 46.25 cm in height, averages 34.4 cm, and is usually between 30 and 37.5 cm. It is often frayed or ragged along its rear margin and located about two-thirds of the way along the back. The broad, centrally notched tail flukes rarely break the surface. The flippers are small and slender.

Their blow is columnar or bushy, about 3.0–4.0 m high. Sometimes, they blow or exhale while under water. Bryde's whales display seemingly erratic behaviour compared to other baleens, because they surface at irregular intervals and can change directions for unknown reasons.

They usually appear individually or in pairs, and occasionally in loose aggregations up to 20 animals around feeding areas. They are more active on water surface than sei whales, and this tendency becomes even stronger in coastal form.

They regularly dive for about 5–15 minutes (maximum of 20 minutes) after four to seven blows. Bryde's whales are capable of reaching depths down to 300 m. When submerging, these whales do not display their flukes. Bryde's whales commonly swim at 1.6–6.4 km/h, but can reach 19–24 km/h. They sometimes generate short (0.4 seconds) powerful, low frequency vocalizations that resemble a human moan.

Monday 31st of October 2016
and we are still anchored when I came in to the CCR 2 minutes before 8 o'clock in the morning. I was two steps behind our Cook and he brought my cinnamon morning special drink. I finished my cinnamon special while our O/S was leading the good morning gymnastics. My knee is almost OK, but a few more days of rest will Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st hopefully make wonders.

As usual, we were busy with working aloft and entry permits. So the day disappeared behind us in a jiff. When I left for my cabin our Pump Man was busy testing our manifold manometers with a reference manometer. And our Cook was giving him pointers
