Tiger safari and bird watching in Sundarbans

Wednesday 7thth of December 2016 and it is time to leave for the last tiger safari and today we really want to see a tiger. I had packed my bag yesterday so I was ready to leave. A shower and a mango juice and I left the room. The boat was at the jetty and we were soon on our way to the tiger reserve.

I had got a bottle of the famous Sundarban honey from my Guide this morning. This is the honey Sundarban honeythey risking their life to collect. And many have lost their life collecting it. So Sundarban honeyI will have a cup of tea with Sundarban honey first thing when I get back home to Bangkok.

We entered the tiger reserve and we saw the Kingfisher sitting on the net protecting the villages against the tigers. It have been the same Black-capped Kingfisher every day. So we were surprised when we discovered that it was a Brown-winged Kingfisher sitting there today.

We saw quite a few monitor lizards and that’s pretty much it, well, except of course for plenty birds. We were going to pass through the “Lesser whistling duck” channel one last time before going back to our car at the Gadkhali, the Gateway to Sundarbans. We were using a technique searching for the tigers that I had implemented yesterday. We keep in the middle of the channels scanning both sides for tigers.

The first days we stayed close to the “sunny side” of the channels searching for everything, especially birds. But now I didn't care about the birds, just one tiger before going home.

But I wanted to see the Lesser whistling ducks one more time before leaving. And they seems to like this place only as this is the only place I have seen them. On the way there we saw two Lesser Adjutant storks on the beach. We changed course to go check them out

Well, the tiger safari came to an end. Beautiful tour around Sundarban tiger reserve, but no tigers have been seen. But plenty birds. We left Datta River and we started to go up the Bidyadhari River towards Gadkhali, the Gateway to Sundarbans.

It have been wonderful, but it will be wonderful to get back to the civilisation again. Well, to Calcutta and a real hotel. The car will pick us up at 1 o'clock and I expect to be in my hotel room around 3 to 4 o'clock.

But first of all we hope to see a Pied Kingfisher while steaming up the Bidyadhari River. We saw a beautiful Pied Kingfisher when we steamed down the Bidyadhari River when we arrived here a few days ago. But no Pied Kingfisher to be seen. And honestly, I was just in a hurry to get to the car so we could get started getting to my hotel.

So, finally in Gadkhali and we left the jetty behind and they were busy loading cargo bound for Sundarbans on boats. Anyway, now you have seen a lot of pictures from Sundarbans Tiger Reserve. I highly recommend a visit and you might have more luck than me and see a tiger. And even if you don't see a tiger you will have a wonderful time.

Now I have a road trip to Calcutta to look forward to. Click HERE to find out if we reach Calcutta. Can't wait to get to my hotel room in Calcutta for a hot shower.
