Day 22: Bandhavgarh:

After breakfast Take jungle safari (Khitauli Zone) also visit Bandhavgarh fort, it is located on the Bandhavgarh hill, rising 811 meters above sea level at the centre of the Bandhavgarh National Park. It is a surrounded by a large number of smaller hills separated by gently sloping valleys. These valleys end in small, swampy meadows, locally known as 'bohera'. Later return to the jungle resort for dinner and overnight.

Tuesday 26th of January 2016 and they knocked on my door at 6 o'clock.
- THANK YOU!! I'M AWAKE!!
I felt asleep again and I got out of bed when my alarm went off @ 06:15. It was cold, very cold, Tiger safari in Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve - Khitauli Zone, Gate 3just a notch over zero and they had double blankets for me in the jeep. We decided yesterday to bring 2 blankets today at it was terrible yesterday.

Yesterday they gave me a hot water bottle or whatever the rubber bag is called. It was very nice to have in the lap, but today I said no thanks.

It was a bit of a bother to keep track of the bottle. We took of towards the park office to register us and to pick up the Guide. And of course, we will get to know what gate and route Tiger safari in Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve - Khitauli Zone, Gate 3we're going to take this morning.

I was wrapped in my blankets and it was kind of OK in the back of the jeep but as we gained speed on the “highway” it was getting cold. We reached the gate to the Khitauli Zone and it was kind of nice when we stopped.

I gave my passport to the driver and he disappeared. He was soon back with my passport and the Guide. A few minutes later one of the park staff came and Tiger safari in Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve - Khitauli Zone, Gate 3our Driver had to sign papers before we could enter the park.

There were quite a few jeeps waiting outside the gate by the time we arrived. And as on the other places we had to wait until 7 and 3 in the afternoon for the gate to open.

I was pondering an idea of sleeping a wee bit longer in the morning as we always had to wait 10 minutes for the gate to open. But I gave up the idea as i don't want to miss anything of the safari. Anyway, below are some of the pictures from our morning drive.

Khitauli zone (Gate 3)

is good for birding, sloth bear and blue-bull sighting. One can do two jungle safaris in a day i.e. Morning & Evening. Park Safari Route "I" are in Magdhi zone. Route-I have 4 sub-route options to choose. As Khitauli zone is least visited by tourists, it is less crowded and easily available for ticket-booking.

Another Jackal trying to sneak up on a Spotted Deer

We come down the dirt track and there was a beautiful Spotted Deer with huge horns. He got startled and he ran away jumping 7 meters over a creek. A beautiful shot that I missed. It would have been a very beautiful picture.

We spotted a Jackal coming out from behind the tree. The Jackal had obviously tried to sneak up on the Spotted Deer to have something to eat.

If we had been 5 minutes later we might have experienced some Jackal/ Spotted Deer action. I guess the Spotted Deer is food for the Jackal to last for a few days.

That was our second Jackal for today and there had not been many minutes between the sightings. Otherwise the park was dead this morning. No monkey and hardly any deer. Usually millions of them around. And no birds, not many so where are all the wildlife today?

Among others I have used Peter Ericsson's web page Birds of Thailand These galleries contain 668 species of the Birds of Thailand and have been of a great help to identify some of the birds as the birds in Thailand and India are, well, many of them are the same.

I have had most help from my friend, the bird pal I met at Suan Rot Fai. Sending pictures of birds I have not been able to identify to him via Line. 3 minutes later he and he have managed to identify most of the birds I have had problems with. THANKS! Visit his web page m☥lever for his beautiful pictures.

And my new aid, maybe, and I say maybe the best aid. I brought my mobile phone as my SIM card have stopped working and I tried to get it to work again so I can use the internet. Thus I had my phone in my pocket on my first game drive in Jim Corbett National Park.

We saw a bird and I asked my Guide and the driver if they had a pen and a paper as I had forgot my pen and paper in my room. I remembered my LG phone and I recorded the name. And thus I will always bring my phone. Writing the name in the car and I have found more than once that it can be hard to read what I had wrote when I'm back in my room.

So now I always have my mobile in my pocket and it has been a great help.

Of course, all bird pictures available on my Indian
bird checklist of bird I have seen by clicking HERE

We left the park and we were back at Bandhavgarh Jungle Lodge around 11 o'clock. Time for breakfast before I go to my room to have a look at the pictures from the morning safari. Onion and Bandhavgarh Jungle Lodgecheese omelette with toast and tea.

This is the best cheese and onion omelette I have had since Donsol so I have two of them, too much and I can't wait to get back to Bangkok to start my diet again

I ask for a pot of tea after breakfast and they bring it to my room where I will enjoy tea while looking at pictures and to update my web page. And time passes very quickly and at 14:30 it is time to leave for the afternoon safari. So being on safari adventure doesn’t relaxing and lolling around in bed.

Jeeps waiting at Gate 2 to enter the Magadhi Zone

We left Bandhavgarh Jungle Lodge at 14 thirty and it was a beautiful afternoon. We went to register at the park office and we got Magadhi Zone at Gate #2. We passed gate 3 on the way and there were several jeeps waiting to enter the park.

There were several jeeps at gate 2 as well. So we registered and we entered the park. I told the driver to stop nad let the other jeeps pass us. We took a d-tour to check a grave for a lion that died back in 2000 or something like that. Below are some of this afternoons pictures.

Magadhi zone (Gate-2)

is also good for tiger sighting. After declaration of Tala Zone as Premium safari zone & hike in its entrance fee, Magadhi Zone will be visitor's choice. It is going to be most visited safari zone of Bandhavgarh. Sambar & spotted deer is more frequently seen in this zone. Bokha is the main dominant tiger in Magadhi zone. Famous Charger Point is also in Magdhi zone of Bandhavgarh. Park Safari Routes "E, F, G, H" are in Magdhi zone. As about 66 tickets are offered for visitors to this zone, usually it can be availed easily.

We pass a Black-rumped Flameback Woodpecker but the Woodpecker refuse to show so no pictures. We stop to take pictures of a Red-vented Bulbul and I see something green flying by and it is a green Woodpecker. I only get one picture before the bird is gone.

The Red-vented Bulbul was gone and the wood pecker was gone. But now there was an Oriental Magpie-robin in the bush behind us and I managed to get some pictures of the Oriental Magpie Robin.

Yet another beautiful day have come to an end. We drove back to Bandhavgarh Jungle Lodge Bandhavgarh Jungle Lodgewhere they had a camp fire going on, just like in Africa. But here it is because it is cold.

It is only me and 2 guys from the UK making a film for BBC living at the Bandhavgarh Jungle Lodge

Tomorrow is my last safari and I'm off for Kanha National Park and the Kanha Jungle Lodge the day after tomorrow. My driver told me that the park is closed tomorrow afternoon and I was not happy. Then I could have left for Kanha National Park and the Kanha Jungle Lodge tomorrow and I would have got 2 extra safaris in Kanha.

Well, I was not happy about this. But one more safari tomorrow and click HERE to see if we're lucky with the tigers. My last chance to see tigers in Bandhavgarh.
