Day 23: Bandhavgarh:

After breakfast, take the high point of your trip to Bandhavgarh would be the safaris into the Tala zone and Khitauli zone, and sightings of the animals, especially tigers. Later return to the jungle resort for dinner and overnight.

Wednesday 27th of January 2016 I was of course tired when they knocked on my door at 6 o'clock. I felt asleep again as I had my alarm clock to go off at 6 fifteen as a back-up. I was in the jeep 2 minutes after departure time. And we took off to the park office 4 minutes later. I had to wrap Tiger safari in Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve - Gate 1/ Tala Zonemyself in blankets and my driver had to take a picture.

I told my driver that it didn't felt so “nippy” today and he told me that it was 4°C today. And that was like a heat wave hitting Bandhavgarh if we compare with the temp yesterday.

We picked up our Guide and we went for our last safari in Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve. I was not happy, when we finished our safari yesterday I learned that the park was closed today afternoon. So what will I do here? The car will come tomorrow for the road trip to Kanha.

I could have done this today after the morning safari and I would have got 2 extra safaris. Now I will waste one day and this was nothing I was happy about. Maybe bird watching around Bandhavgarh Jungle Lodge in the afternoon. Anyway, some pictures form this morning safari below.

The driver and the guide wanted a quick stop for a toilet. There is a site for drinking and eating your own food and while they were away I was sitting in the jeep looking at a Golden-fronted Leafbird in the tree above the jeep. It was a beautiful bird and I had a few pictures. But it was not so easy to focus with all the branches and leafs in the tree.

We left and we drove back the same route was had come from after seeing the tiger. We passed the place and there were several jeeps full of people screaming and pointing. Children falling out from the jeeps and people running around, and it is not allowed to get out of the jeep.

Golden comedy, well, actually not, it was kind of tragic to see. We stayed well clear of them and I told my Guide and Driver to take us out of there. Same this morning, people were screaming and shouting and I got pissed off.
- FER FOOCKS SAKE! SHUT THE FOOCK UP!!!

And quiet it got. 6 or 7 full jeeps and everyone looked at me.
- We're here for foocking 3 hours, is it possible to shut the foock up and enjoy the nature. Show some foocking respect for the nature and the animals!!! Twats! Well, I never said twats, but I was thinking it.

Everyone looked at me and my Guide and Driver smiled. They were also embarrassed about their behaviour.

Among others I have used Peter Ericsson's web page Birds of Thailand These galleries contain 668 species of the Birds of Thailand and have been of a great help to identify some of the birds as the birds in Thailand and India are, well, many of them are the same.

I have had most help from my friend, the bird pal I met at Suan Rot Fai. Sending pictures of birds I have not been able to identify to him via Line. 3 minutes later he and he have managed to identify most of the birds I have had problems with. THANKS! Visit his web page m☥lever for his beautiful pictures.

And my new aid, maybe, and I say maybe the best aid. I brought my mobile phone as my SIM card have stopped working and I tried to get it to work again so I can use the internet. Thus I had my phone in my pocket on my first game drive in Jim Corbett National Park.

We saw a bird and I asked my Guide and the driver if they had a pen and a paper as I had forgot my pen and paper in my room. I remembered my LG phone and I recorded the name. And thus I will always bring my phone. Writing the name in the car and I have found more than once that it can be hard to read what I had wrote when I'm back in my room.

So now I always have my mobile in my pocket and it has been a great help.

Of course, all bird pictures available on my Indian
bird checklist of bird I have seen by clicking HERE

Of course, I have seen many many more, but this list is for birds I managed to get on picture

Some of the pictures are OK, and some of them are straight up in a very poor quality

We drove back home slowly and I spotted a Lesser adjutant Stork. I asked the driver to stop and I got a few pictures. Yesterday we passed another Lesser adjutant Stork but we could only see half of it as the stork was behind some grass.

We continued and I spotted a Lesser adjutant Stork on the other side of a pond. I asked the driver to stop again and when we had stopped I discovered that it was 2 Lesser adjutant Stork. All in all it had been a good morning, but how to kill the afternoon when the park was closed?

I planned to do a birding tour in the area around the Bandhavgarh Jungle Lodge. But my driver came knocking on my door at 1 o'clock. He asked if I wanted to go for a game drive in the buffer zone. Of course I want and we were going to leave at 2 o'clock.

We passed something I thought was rice paddies on the way to Eco Tourism Zone - 5 Panpatha Buffer. But my Driver told me it was wheat. And they had the same huts in the fields as I have seen in SE Asia. The paddies are outside the villages and they need to houses to sleep in while working the fields. And as we can see there is one difference between the huts here and in SE Asia. Can you spot the difference?

And above we can see that the field huts are built on top of stilts. Due to heavy rain? We have seen houses on top of stilts around Asia and this is to prevent flooding of the house during the Tiger safari in Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserverain season. Some houses even have a boat under the house.

But this is not the reason in this area, it is because of the tiger. In the area there are a few people getting killed by tigers every year. So it is no joke around here.

As they told me in Gir when I asked about them doing laundry in Hiran River that was full of crocodiles “what to do when you have to share the water with the crocodiles?” Anyway, we left Bandhavgarh Jungle Lodge just after 2 and we arrived to gate #5 at the Eco Tourism Zone - 5 Panpatha Buffer 45 minutes later. And same routines here, passport and register

On the way back to the gate we see 3 Indian Gazelles and this is the first time I see a Indian Gazelle. But they were very far away. We left and 3 minutes later we had another Gazelle next to the road and I got a few pictures before he ran away.

I had seen quite a few beautiful birds, but I managed to get exactly ZERO pictures. But I was happy with the Indian Gazelle, and of course, we saw monkeys, both the long tailed Langurs and the Red-faced Macaques. Plenty Spotted Deer and even the Nilgai, sometimes called nilgau, the largest Asian antelope

We were back at the gate and we dropped our Guide and we continued towards the Bandhavgarh Jungle lodge. As soon as the sun came down behind the mountains and trees it got nippy and I wrapped myself in a blanket. We drove the same way back and I had told my driver to slow down when we passed the wheat fields outside the town where our hotel is.

We passed gate 3 and there was a forest guard at the road side. We stopped and there were Spotted Deer and monkeys giving alarm. A tiger was nearby and we stayed until it was pitch dark. I told the driver to return to the hotel as we wold not see anything.
- If he cross the road we can see him in the headlights

We left and I had my last dinner at the Bandhavgarh Jungle Lodge. I asked for the same dinner as I had have for every evening here. BBQ Chicken in Rosemary and pasta. Naan bread and tea and it is very good. Breakfast around 8 o'clock tomorrow and I don't know when my driver arrive to take me to next national park, Kanha and Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st hopefully more beautiful birds and tigers.

But we will start with a road trip to Kanha and this is nothing I look forward to. And I discovered that my Airtel SIM card have given up so no internet, but I hope it works in Kanha. Well, we will find out how this turns out by clicking HERE
