Day 4: Sasan Gir

After breakfast, Jeep Safari Gir trips are designed to offer you the best of wild experience. One can also opt for shorter visits at the Gir Interpretation Zone where you will be watching Asaitic lions. Take a jungle safari and return back to the resort for dinner and overnight stay.

Friday 8th of January 2016 it was hard to get out of bed at 5 o'clock. But thinking of the safari made it a little easier to get up. A Diet Pepsi and a hot shower and I was in the reception Safari adventure in Gir National Parkat 5 thirty where the jeep was waiting for me.

I had asked for extra blankets for my tent wise from yesterday's Freezing Smiley in Gir National Parkmorning safari. I took my seat in the jeep wrapped in the blanket and we were soon on our way.

We drove to the office to register and to pick up our Guide. And I had to pay 1200 Rupee for the camera permit. So I handed my passport and camera permit to the diver and he was back with the guide 10 Safari adventure in Gir National Parkminutes later.

We were soon on our way to the gate and today we would take rout #3 and a little bit of route #7 from yesterday.

So this promise to be exciting. Leopards, lions and beautiful birds is what’s on my wish list.

There were a few jeeps at the gate when we arrived. Our Guide reported us and we were soon on our way down the dust road in to the Gir National Park. And below you can find some of the pictures I took during our morning game drive in Gir National Park.

Game drive/ safari. I remember when I got my safari itinerary in Tanzania. Game drive and I sent them an e-mail: “I'm going to play no foocking golf!” and I was soon having a reply that game drive was what they call safari and the animals are called game. Yeah, you learn a lot of new things watching the wildlife. So now I know that a game drive is a safari.

We started by driving to the Kamleshwar Dam - Hiran-I Dam to see the sunrise. I saw three different Kingfishers, White throated Kingfisher, Common Kingfisher and the Pied Kingfisher sitting next to each other on grass straws stinging up from the lake. They were too far away for any good pictures.

But it looked good with the Pied Kingfisher when he took off starting to look for fish in the lake making several dives. But it was too far away. We were soon continuing our game drive looking for exciting animals.

Among others I have used Peter Ericsson's web page Birds of Thailand These galleries contain 668 species of the Birds of Thailand and have been of a great help to identify some of the birds as the birds in Thailand and India are, well, many of them are the same.

I have had most help from my friend, the bird pal I met at Suan Rot Fai. Sending pictures of birds I have not been able to identify to him via Line. 3 minutes later he and he have managed to identify most of the birds I have had problems with. THANKS! Visit his web page m☥lever for his beautiful pictures.

No lions or leopards this morning but it had been a beautiful drive through Gir National Park. As I Sasan Giruse to tell my Guides, never mind if we see anything. It is just so very nice to enjoy the nature.

We drove back through Sasan Gir and we made a few stops in a last desperate try to get hold of some more Diet Pepsi, I had bought 12 cans and this was obviously the last cans in the whole of Sasan Gir.

Well, I'm better off with water. But I was disappointed. And why they bring Coke Light when I ask for Diet Pepsi? It is not like it sounds Diet Pepsivery similar when I ask for Diet Pepsi.
Diet Pepsi in Sasan Gir- Do you have Diet Pepsi?
- Yes
Then he brings out a can of Diet Coke for me
- What's wrong with you?

Seriously, do I have the right to get slightly annoyed? They try to make money from me like I'm stupid. You ask for anything and they say yes desperate to keep you in the shop wasting my time. You go to a shop looking for a SPECIFIC thing. You ask for a blue Skeppshult bicycle.
- Just a moment!
You are waiting wasting your time and the twat brings a red “Made in China” Scooby Doo 750 with 3 wheels. The last thing you want to buy. But the twat really Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st hope that you will buy the Sasan Girred “Made in China” Scooby Doo 750 with 3 wheels.

Anyway, we were soon on our way towards the Lion Safari Camp again and I was looking forward for some birding at Hiran River outside my hotel.

And today, wise from my birding along the Hiran River outside my hotel I went straight down to the Hiran River when we were back at Lion Safari Camp. Trying to catch the birds before they take their siesta in the heat during the mid-day.

Hiran River

is a river in Gujarat in western India whose source is near the Sasa hills in Gir forest. Its drainage basin has a maximum length of 40 km. The total catchment area of the basin is 518 km. Its major tributaries are Saraswati River and Ambakhoi stream, and many other unknown branches make this river almost complete near Talala town.

Hiran River is a major river system which supports a variety of wildlife ecological systems and human settlements. Kamleshwar Dam, often known as Hiran1 and Umrethi Dam, are some of the major projects on the river. As the river flows from the western part of Gir forest, it is a major source of water for the forest ecology and biodiversity for the whole year.

Crocodile and snake land

I crossed the concrete wall they had built over Hiran River. During the rainy season this turns in to a waterfall. But Birding at Hiran River, Sasan Gir, Indianow when Hiran River is dry the concrete wall turn up river in to a dam.

There was nothing to be seen from the concrete wall/ bridge. Well, I could see a lady doing laundry in the river. But it was too Smiley laundry in Sasan Girfar away to see if she did any laundry for Lion Safari Camp, yes, I have sent clothes for laundry. So I have some interest in the laundry business in the area.

And when I was on the other side of Hiran River there wasn't much more to see. I could see a black bird from the concrete wall/ bridge- Looked like a small Egret.

Well, I could leave the dust road and walk along Hiran River. Sakes and crocodiles, well birding or bust! I'm usually use a technique called “stomp and jump” when I'm off road in Thailand. The stomping and jumping scare away snakes and Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st hopefully all other animals that want to eat me.

Birding, and the “stomp and jump” technique is nothing that you can use because the birds will be long gone when you reach the area.

But if I had bothered to come down here I cannot give up. So I got out in the crocodile and snake territory threading very carefully. I was working my way deep in to the crocodile and snake land. Keeping an eye on the river bed to make sure there wasn't any crocodiles hiding in the reeds.

Not even a race horse can run away from a crocodile if the distance are less than 15 or 10 meters. I don't remember if it was 10 or 15 meters so I stayed well clear, if you are within the crocodiles sprint area you cannot get away, it is impossible. Same with the hippo, YOU CANNOT RUN AWAY FROM A HIPPO!! And a Hippo can run much much longer than a crocodile. 59km/h and it is the second killer in Africa after the mosquito!

I was deep in to crocodile and snake territory threading very carefully. Great Egret or a Eastern Greta Egret, as i understand it the only difference is the length of the neck. “The eastern Great Egret can be distinguished from other white egrets and herons in Asia and Australia by its very long neck, one and a half times as long as its own body” A Pond Heron and many birds in the trees.

Suddenly I had a wasp flying around, no problem, BUT THIS ONE SOUNDED LIKE A MOTORCYCLE!! If I have a chance to see beautiful birds I can take a stick from a wasp. But if they sounds like motorcycles I'm out of here. Never mind the birds.

Suan Rot Fai in Bangkok have many beautiful birds and it is pretty safe to do birding there. Here I'm surrounded by crocodiles and snakes, and on top of this wasps sounding like motorcycles flying around. I go back to my hotel. I had seen plenty birds and I also saw the Green Bee-eater so I was happy.

I could see Lion Safari Camp across the Hiran River and there was one of the staff keeping an eye out for me, good to know when I'm attacked by a crocodile or a flying motorcycle.

I was very happy with my time along the Hiran River just across from Lion Safari Camp. One black bird that I could not identify, most likely a Black Heron. I went back to my tent and after lunch it was time to leave for our last safari here at Gir National Park.

When we left I spotted two Oriental White ibis in a tree outside my hotel. At the garbage dump just outside the wall with the hole for the dust road to our hotel there were 2 Cattle Egrets. So some “BONUS” birding, always welcome.

We went for the procedures at the park office, I handed my passport and 1200 Rupees to the Driver and he came back with a camera permit and the guide. My Guide told us that we would take route #6 today. This is the route I have liked the best so far. A beautiful route, but we saw the leopard on route #7

Anyway, let's hope that we can see something exciting on Route #6 today. Just look below and you will find some of the pictures from my last game drive in Gir National Park.

So, yet another gorgeous safari have come to an end. My last safari in Gir National Park. Tomorrow morning and I will leave for New Delhi via Alang. 4 game drives in Gir and it have been Diet Pepsi in Sasan Girfantastic. The leopard and many beautiful birds. The only bad thing have been the 5 o'clock in the morning wake up call.

We dropped our Guide and we made a last try to get some Diet Pepsi, but we failed.

So back to Lion Safari Camp leaving the park office and Sasan Gir behind for the last time. Well, I guess that we have to pass through Sasan Gir tomorrow when leaving for Alang. I will not miss Sasan Gir, a town of nothing Sasan Girexcept for the National Park.

We will leave at 9 o'clock tomorrow morning so I can sleep long if I want, so I will set my alarm to 6 o'clock. Checking some pictures and then Hiran River for some birding before we leave.

So, well, this is pretty much it from Sasan Gir and the Asiatic lions. How things will turn out in Alang? Well, let's hope that I can see the scrap yard. They told me that I need a permit as a foreigner. If you click HERE you will soon find out how the adventure in Alang turns out.
