Tiger safari and bird watching in Sundarbans

Saturday 10th of March 2018 and my alarm goes of at 4. I open a bottle of Pepsi MAX and I start to go through my pictures from yesterday. A shower and I'm at the boat 5 minutes before 6 o'clock. It is a foggy morning, but we expect it to clear when the sun is coming up over the forest.

It is a gorgeous morning and I enjoy the scenery while drinking my tea. Must be the smallest tea cups I have ever seen, but the tea taste good. We're steaming deeper and deeper in to tiger land while the sun is rising above the forest. Promise to be a gorgeous day.

We reached the “Big Boss” area and by now the fog was cleared. We saw several tiger tracks in the mud, but no tiger. We met another boat and they told us that there was a dead wild boar on the beach further down the channel. A dead wild boar means food for the tigers. My Guide have seen 2 tigers this year, one of them was a tiger eating a dead cow that had come down with the river.

We found the wild boar, but no sign of any tigers so we continued to the very small channels between two of the “Big Boss” three islands. More tiger tracks but no other signs of any tiger in the area. But we had a Eurasian Curlew and an Indian Pond Heron on the mudflats and I took this opportunity to get a few pictures.

We drove back to the dead wild boar and now there were several boats waiting to get lucky. But still no sign of any tiger. Many boats gave up and left and they told me that we had to leave in order to be at the forest office before 16 thirty. Then we will get a permission for 3 more days. Then we don't need to go there 6 thirty tomorrow and we can get right on with our search for tigers at 6 o'clock in the morning.

We left and we drove along the channels towards the forest office. I spotted a Common Redshank on the mudflats and I asked the driver to stop. Well, our boat, trying to approach a bird is like coming up to the bird with an army. Stop the engine, engine astern. Year 2018 and they use a engine telegraph to get astern. And the guy in the engine is sleeping somewhere and the driver ring the bell to the engine room. It sounds like the ice cream van is coming to town.

Then to try to turn around and we start swing in circles, and when they stop the turn we start to go circles in the other direction. And the Common Redshank was very kind to us, I mean very very kind. The bird just stood there looking at us. But the Redshank must have grown tired of us and the bird took off when we finally made it in position. Well, we never made it in to position. Oh how I miss the boat we had here last time.

We came out to River Gomdi leaving the Sajnekhali Wildlife Sanctuary, Sundarban Tiger Reserve behind. Our hotel is on the other side of the River Gomdi, opposite from the Sajnekhali Wildlife Sanctuary. They turned left instead of right when we came out on River Gomdi.
- Where are you going? I asked
- We're going to fill up fresh water
- Not as long as I'm on board

I told them that I paid for the boat and the boat should be ready. I fly around the world to go for tiger safari. And now they leave the tiger safari to go fill up fresh water again. It was bad enough that I missed the first day’s safari. But then I never said anything. I told them that they could do this when we were ready with the safari.

They told me that we started too early. And I should be considerate with the crew
- Why is it always me that should be considerate?

I have paid 5000 ++ Dollars for safari. Plus tickets etc. They should have said that the safari was between 11:00 and 12:00 when they sent the quotation. Then they can see how many customer they get. Not my problem to be considerate, it is up to JUSTTRAVELS India to have enough staff to serve their customers. And it should not be on my expense to replenish the boat, should be ready when they come to pick me up at 6 o'clock. Yes, I will be very considerate and I will never use any service from JUSTTRAVELS India again.

They should understand that I want to spend my time looking for tigers and not down the docks filling fresh water in the boat. Totally shame less just to suggest such a thing. Well, I was disappointed, last time we had a good tour, but then the owner was with us. Anyway, my alarm is set to go off at 4 again and click HERE to find out if we find any tigers tomorrow.
