Birding/ Bird watching in Singapore - Botanical Garden

Friday 3rd of November 2017 and I waited until the second call at 05:10 before I got out of bed. I started the day with a Pepsi MAX I looked out the window at 6 and it was pitch dark. 7 o'clock and it was still dark. I had my breakfast and I booked a UBER car and we were soon on our way to Botanical Garden subway station.

I entered the park and I ended up in an area I had never been before. I have only been in the Botanical Garden once before and I was walking around a big pond with a stage. Now I was in a totally different area and I walked around the pond a few times before being able to get to the other parts of the park.

I spotted a few Jungle Mynas that I took pictures of. A beautiful bird, but very common, a pest as the mynas is spreading and other birds disappearing. Walking around the Eco Lake and I also saw the Black Swan and the White-breasted Waterhen. There was a couple of Black-naped Orioles but too far away for any good pictures. There was also a Yellow-vented Bulbul, otherwise not much in this part of the Botanical Garden.

I had trouble to find my way out of this new part of the Botanical Garden. But some kind visitors gave me directions and I walked towards the part I had been in when I was here the first time. The Symphony Lake and the Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage. Last time I was here they told me about Kingfishers around the Symphony Lake. And it was at the entrance I had spotted the Oriental Pied Hornbill. But back then I had only my “pocket” camera.

But how to get there? I ended up waking along a busy street and through parking lots, not what I had expected in a Botanical Garden and I was not happy.

Healing Garden

I end up in the Healing Garden and I walk through the garden and I end up on a street on the other side of the Botanical Garden. I had seen a Pigeon, Squirrel and a Woodpecker fighting with each other, but they took off when I had my camera ready.

I walked along the Dalvey Road. I was thirsty and no cash. And I passed some restaurants but cash only. I was very happy when I discovered the big main gate to the Botanical Garden. The Nassim Gate. This is where I had seen the Oriental Pied Hornbill last time I was here.

I was watching an Oriental White Eye when a lady came up to me. She told me that there was a huge monitor lizard down the road. I said thank you, I didn't bother to tell her that we had a lot of them in Bangkok. There was soon another lady coming by and she started to talk to me about birds. She pointed at the rain forest and she told me about the Oriental Pied Hornbills.

I bought two bottles of water in the restaurant and I enjoyed them sitting down in the entrance. I started to walk down towards the Symphony Lake and the Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage.

I came down to the part of the Symphony Lake with trees. The Kingfisher area. I spotted the White-breasted Waterhen and I had a good time watching a White-breasted Waterhen couple. It was very fun to watch the birds. They were very scared and they took off as soon as they spotted me. Hiding in the bushes very shy. But as soon as I played the White-breasted Waterhen they came out and they started a terrible noise.

I spotted a new bird that I was not able to identify until I was back in my hotel room. A beautiful bird and it turned out to be an Ashy Tailorbird. I also spotted a Yellow-vented Bulbul.

I left the area and I spotted a Common Kingfisher sitting on a straw among the reeds. Very hard to get a picture as the bird was covered by the reeds. I started to go back towards the Nassim Gate to get a taxi back to my hotel for some tea and oatmeal before my afternoon birding.

The Symphony Lake is full of turtles and there were a group of tourists feeding them. I stopped to have a look, but as I was getting hungry I continued towards the Nassim Gate. I was up the hill when I turned around to look down at the Symphony Lake. I see a White-throated Kingfisher sitting on the arrow in the Symphony Lake. So I turned around and I walked down to the lake again. Will I reach the area before the bird takes off and disappears?

Not allowed to cross the scene on the Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage so I had to walk around the whole Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage. But I was lucky and the White-throated Kingfisher was still sitting on the arrow.

I got the pictures and when I walked back to the Nassim Gate. I had to walk around the Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage and I spotted a White-breasted Waterhen on a huge leaf on the water. That was the last bird I saw in the Botanical Garden before I left. The UBER car was here after a few minutes and I was soon on my way back to Holiday Inn - Singapore Atrium.

Back in Asia from New Zealand, in New Zealand I could do bird watching all day long. Singapore and it is very hot so a few hours of birding in the morning and a few hours in the afternoon.

The plan is to go bird watching at the Pasir Ris Park in the afternoon. So I will spend a few hours in my room cooling down in the AC drinking tea and eating oatmeal.

3 o'clock in the afternoon and I booked a UBER car to get to Pasir Ris Park just north of Changi International Airport. We just need to click HERE to find out if I managed to find any birds.
