Birding/ Bird watching in Singapore - Botanical Garden

Saturday 4th of November 2017 and I was off to the Botanical Garden and this time I went straight to the main gate, the Nassim Gate. Just inside the gate on the way down to the Symphony Lake I could hear two Black-naped Orioles in a tree. I played the Black-naped Oriole song and the birds started to look around for the “bird”

I had people coming up to me to see what I was doing. Bird watching, there is always people to talk to and many times I have learnt a lot. I was soon leaving the Black-naped Orioles behind walking down to the “Kingfisher Walk” in the NW corner of the Symphony Lake.

On the way there I spotted the Spotted dove and the Yellow-vented Bulbul. I could also hear the Olive-backed Sunbird but I never saw the bird.

Approaching the “Kingfisher Walk” and I run in to a couple carry around big cameras. I asked if they were looking for birds. and yes, they were. Turned out they were from Finland and they were living here in Singapore. So I got a few handy bird watching tips.

We compared notes for the day and we had seen the same birds: Black-naped Oriole, Yellow-vented Bulbul and the White-breasted Waterhen. I told them about the straw with the Kingfisher. The bird was sitting there every time I came. So now, but the Common Kingfisher took off before we got any pictures. I started by walking to the Orchid Garden , my new friends from Finland used to see Sunbirds there.

Saturday night and there was a performance on the Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage. Many people and same when I got in to the National Orchid Garden, there was a lot of people and I didn't had much hope to see any birds. They charged me 5 Sing Dollars for the entrance to the National Orchid Garden. I took the opportunity to buy 2 bottles of water.

I got a Yellow-vented Bulbul and a Spotted dove out of my visit to the National Orchid Garden. It was starting to get dark and I wanted to have a walk on the rainforest walk before going back to my hotel. It was just a 100meters or so from the National Orchid Garden to the rainforest walk. Maybe I will see the Hornbill or the Greater racket-tailed Drongo.

Took me 10 minutes or so to walk through the rain forest and it was time to go home. Coming out of the forest and I saw a guy taking pictures at some bushes and I went over to see if it was any bird pictures. Well, it was flowers he took pictures of. But I saw a Red Junglefowl with babies looking for food in the leaves on the lawn so I went to check it out.

Time to go home

Getting busy at the Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage

Coming back to the clock tower and I was confused. The clock seemed to show the wrong time. I asked a guard and his wrist watch had the same time as my wrist watch. I pointed at the clock tower and he explained that it was a world clock. 4 sides with 4 different times. I said thank you and I started to walk back to the Nassim Gate.

It was getting busy at the Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage and I met a lot of people entering the Botanical Garden with pick-nick baskets and blankets. I took a taxi to Singapura Plaza to look for a power bank for my phone. Playing the bird songs require a power bank. And after having run out of power back at the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, in the middle of nowhere with no taxi stand I decided to get a power bank for my birding adventures.

Time to go back home tomorrow, my flight is in the evening and I have planned for a birding tour to the Botanical Garden in the morning. Click HERE to find out if I find any birds.
