Swimming with humpback whales on Tonga

Saturday 7th of October 2017 and I found one of the Gecko lizards on my door in the morning. To see a Gicko means luck, at least in Thailand. So I had a good feeling when we were sitting in the van on our way to the boat in Neiafu. Gecko in the morning means plenty whales during the day

We left Neiafu and we had soon found a whale. But the whale disappeared but not long after and we had found another singing humpback whale.

I'm really impressed by my camera - How much money have I wasted on this sh*t?

We're on the way again and the sea sickness kicks in

We search for more whales and we stop at another beach to have our lunch. The place was full of seabirds and the white parts were beautifully blue from the reflections from the water. I got a few pictures of a Brown booby and another bird that I have not identified.

We got news on the radio about a mother and her baby. So we went to check it out and we were finally having some luck with the whale swimming.

Baby comes up to play

Beautiful

What a FINALE of the day!!!

Look at them whales having a whale of a time!!!

Baby comes up to play

Time for us to leave the beautiful whales

Never try to swim after a whale, they just disappear. We stayed away and the baby was very scared. Just up to get air and down again to hide under the mother. Second time up and he (Yes, it was a little boy) and he stayed around longer. He came closer to us every time he came back up. Humpbacks are very curious and in the end he came to play with us. We got 4 or 5 swims with the whales, 10 to 15 minutes each time.

What a beautiful end of the day, the best day we have had. And as I said, days like this is the reason for us to come to Vava'u. My new friend told us that it had been worth it, they had paid with sea sickness and we were now rewarded. We were all in a good mood going back to Neiafu and we will have dinner at Bella Vista tonight.

I will go to bed early, my alarm is set to go off at 5 and I will go bird watching. The rest of the team will sleep, Sunday and everything is closed on Vava'u. Not allowed to do anything so I will look for birds. Will I find the Tongan Whistler? Click HERE to find out.
