Öresundsbron is a combined railway and motorway bridge across the Öresund strait between Sweden and Denmark. The bridge runs nearly 8 kilometres from the Swedish coast to the artificial island Peberholm in the middle of the strait. The crossing is completed by the 4-kilometre Drogden Tunnel from Peberholm to the Danish island of Amager.

The bridge is 1,092 m long, with a main span of 490 m and a navigation clearance of 55 m. The pylon and anchor pier foundations are made up of concrete caissons that are lowered into dredged pits some 13-28 m below sea level. Protective islands, designed to prevent ship collisions, surround each caisson.

The Öresund Bridge have the longest cable-stayed main span in the world for both road and rail traffic. The Öresund Bridge extends half way across Öresund to the artificial island Peberholm. The bridge goes from Lernacken just south of Malmö and Limhamn crossing the Flintrännan navigation channel and reaching Peberholm.

The artificial island Peberholm is approximately 4 km long and mainly made up of dredged material from the Öresund seabed. A total of 1.6 million m³ of stone and 7,5 million m3 of sand and dredged material were required for its completion. A lot of dredging!

The western part of the Öresund Link is a 4 km long tunnel between the artificial island and the artificial peninsula at Kastrup. The tunnel is the longest immersed tube tunnel for both road and rail traffic in the world. It consists of 20 prefabricated reinforced concrete segments.

The connection between Peberholm and the artificial peninsula at Kastrup on Amager island, the nearest populated part of Denmark, is through the 4,050-metre long Drogden Tunnel. It comprises a 3,510-metre immersed tube plus 270-metre entry tunnels at each end.

The car ferry line between Limhamn and Dragør was shut down during the autumn 1999 and 30th of April 2002 they took the last ferry between Malmö and Copenhagen out of traffic. Read more about the ferries in Öresund.

When they built the bridge I thought it was a good idea. Merge Malmö and Copenhagen in to 1 big city. Easy access to Kastrup airport (Copenhagen International airport) if you live in Malmö. It's very close from Malmö but just a 2 way ticket over the bridge cost you a small fortune.

Taxi have to pay both ways and when you have a lot of luggage it's convenient to be picked up by the door and taxi drop you at the luggage trolley. Just to wheel your luggage to the check in counter. Stupid to think that you can merge a city with an expensive toll to cross the bridge.

Ships in Drogden when I pass Peberholmen in a train on my way to Helsingborg

But coming back to visit Sweden and I discover that the commuter train traffic in Helsingborg have turned from Øresundtågalmost none exicting to very excellent. Train to Copenhagen and Gothenburg at least once per hour since Øresundtåg started their service.

When I was study in Gothenburg there were three trains per day to Helsingborg. And arriving to Helsingborg it was impossible to get anywhere with train.

But after they built the bridge Øresundtåg and SkåneTrafiken have a train going to every small village in the SkåneTrafikenSouth of Sweden, and they are going often. I remember going to visit my brother. He told me to take the train.
Yet another Smiley on www.aladdin.st - Are you ducking joking?

But there is a train every 20 minutes and as I usually stays at hotel Marina Plaza I stay just on top of the train station. 2 minutes' walk to the platform. It was very convenient and I have taken the train many times since. Much quicker than with the car.

It was really impressive. Pågatåg leaving Nya Knutpunkten all the time, very impressive that they have manage to make something so much better. Except for the train to Copenhagen International Airport Kastrup. I like to go by train and the service is good enough. Plenty trains, but two or three stops after leaving Helsingborg the train is full of luggage and it is a hassle.

Coming from the South and we can see the Öresunds Bridge in the radar
